About Me

My photo
My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Bluebells Adventures Dress :-)

Bluebells is an occasional name for this dress and actually the print has nothing in common with the flowers except the colour... I read this name on the label while choosing the fabric for my birthday outfit. When I asked a shopgirl why they called it in that way if the fabric is just some crepe, she was pretty surprised that I didn't see the bluebells on the material... I only had to smile and agreed with the idea of the name, so let it be Bluebells :-)

The post was updated after taking new photos at Easter on April 16.

The pattern #4 Grace was taken from an awesome Burda Vintage issue, 2014. All the issue is nice and represents modified retro or vintage patterns from 50ths. The style that required thin waist, perfect fitting and enormous quantity of fabric. But who is able to resist its charming and feminine silhouettes? I'm surely not. I only can't afford to buy so much fabric to make the skirt with pleats or gathering around the waist that makes me look like a not very big haystack. The fabric has the print with pretty big bunches of flowers so there should be some pattern with as less constructive lines as possible. And I adore this ideal one-piece sleeve with a gusset. One can die for this shoulder line:-))

The earrings are Bluebells too:-)

So the bodice is ideal and I have the only advice if you don't make the dress of the transparent fabric: when sewing the gusset, at first re-inforce the armholes' cuts with the stripe of interface  to prevent stretching or fraying.

As for the skirt, I had to make changes. First of all, I had much less fabric than Burda wants so I just used, let's say, one half instead of two, it means I cut only back part of the skirt and the side seams of the paper pattern became central back seam of my skirt; then drafted pleats on the hips line, decreased the size of the waist pleats, sewed them to the middle of the hips and got the skirt I got. To do that you should draw a line for hips, about 16-18 cm down from the waist and mark the pleats in the same way as it is done for  the waist ( it's simpler to do if you just put your paper pattern to the drawn hips' line, then all the lines will be the same). I made it right on the fabric but you can do it at first on the paper.

Draft the hips' line.

Count the size for the pleats' depth for waist and for the hips. You should to measure the difference between the length of the half of your hips and the width of the half of the skirt, then divide this difference for 11 (the number of the pleats ) and then for two again to decrease your pleats  symmetrically. Then do the same for the waist. On the picture you can see the new red lines which will be seams on the skirt to provide the fitting around the hips.

The dress looks well and has nice fitting without it but to emphasize it's design and accent the blue colour, I made a simple belt that fastens with velcro.
At first I swe the fastening to the cut fabric and sewed the belt detail.

One of my favourite dresses indeed!
