About Me

My photo
My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Beaded Buttons, or Georgina Colour

One of my next sewing projects wants me to learn  a couple of new skills and today I am ready to share the first result, beaded buttons.
The diversity of buttons on sale is limitless so there's no much need to create something on my own. But it is said here "the desire is stronger than necessity" and it means when it goes about favourite doings, follow your passion:-)

It is not very hard to bead buttons, besides getting unique items, you can also save a lot if you have suitable materials in your stash. I think it is possible to adjust the pattern to the only number of seed beads but the button will look much better if to use both 11/0 (mine is 10/0) and 15/0 seed beads as the beaders teach.
The initial size of my button is 1.2 cm, after beading it became 1.5 cm. I started my work exactly like in this video from +Potomac Bead Company. But after making this part of beading on the photo I had to change the pattern because for my projects I didn't have special shanks and my plastic buttons have a slight convex.

So after the previous row on the above photo, I made a peyote row of 10/0 seed beads and then the row of 15/0 seed beads. Then decreasing row - nine 15/0 decreased to five. And in the last row added only four 10/0 which were pulled together. Then wove the thread ends and cut them.

I like what I get and hope my learning the next skill will have good result as well.

Curtain Loop Tape Sewing

I do not do only such trifles as sewing clothes. Sometimes I use my skills to make something more useful. For example, to sew a curtain loop tape to a piece of tulle to make a curtain of it:-)

The most important, while making that, is not to be in hurry. First of all the right side of the tulle should be defined and also how to place the tape to have the loops on the wrong side of the ready curtain and not vice versa. I know about that so much because I did the latter not only once.
So put the wrong side of the tape to the right side of the fabric.

It is possible to stitch either from the tape or from the curtain side. I prefer the latter when it goes about the tulle because, in my opinion, in this way it is easier to control the process. The tulle doesn't slip, the seam allowance is kept even.

After finishing the first stitching bend the tape on the wrong side, I recommend at least to pin it. Especially if the curtain is long, e.g. 6 m. It helps to avoid twisting and uneven gathering of the tulle while stitching. Then stitch, iron, gather according to the type of your tape and hang.

Dots & Roses, or Polka Dot Dress

The most feminine in our family is my five-year-old niece. Her mother let me post here the photo that would explain all I want to say about my choice of the fabric for this dress but I had no chance to see the girl these days to take a picture so the explanation will be quite long:-) As a real princess, she's got a big wardrobe... it seems to be much bigger than mine... and among her dresses my favourite is the dark blue one with white dots:-) Obviously when I came across the linen with the same print, I couldn't leave the store without it.
Another source of inspiration was the material that I saw few years ago but didn't buy it because of a great habit I had acquired lately: never buy fabric not knowing what you are going to make from it. That was about the same polka dots but with inclusions of tiny rose buds. So when thinking over the embellishment for this dress, I remembered that print and thought I were able to make my own fabric if to involve my cross-stitching skills into the process of the sewing. I like when different needlework skills can be incorporated to get a nice result and I enjoy a lot to see other handicrafters make the same. For example, not so long ago my friend Inna impressed everybody with this her wonderful work.

To make the dress I used Simplicity pattern 2442 from Diana Moden 2/2012. And to embroider the roses I used our Ukrainian production motifs on water-soluble vliseline.
It is my fourth item from Simplicity. Before I made dress 6093coat 2311, dress 1653.  This time I had to lengthen the outfit again. Besides, I omitted the draped band detail because firstly, my fabric is rather thick and stiff  and secondly, because of the planned embroidery.

As I've mentioned above, my fabric is linen and this one is thick enough so I refused from the lining. All the front details were cut from the main fabric and for back I cut the facing.  To cut the facing you need to outline the back detail on the piece of the fabric, to draw the inner outline for 5-6 cm from the outer and cut it. As the facing doesn't cover all the back, my dress's side seam looks like that on the third photo.

The first motif was cross-stitched on the back. If you want to embellish your outfit with embroidery, it is absolutely right at first to embroider the details after the cutting and only then sew them. I did wrong, it means I made that after the bodice was ready. Because I just didn't know exactly where I wanted to have those roses. So broke the  rule.

Joining the bodice and the skirt. Simplicity drew the waist line for three cm lower than the top edge of the skirt. I don't know why, probably to give a chance to correct it according to the figure. For me it was right to cut 1.5 cm from the edge, then to draw the new waist line for 1.5 cm from the new edge again. And then for the better fitting I deepened front in the very centre for about 1 cm more and drew the final waist line  (thick arrows point it on the low photo).
I also stitched the inner waist band on a sewing machine.

It is clear enough the front embroidery was made in the wrong way too. I made it after all the dress was ready. In this way I could try the dress on and pin the motifs many times in different variants to see which of them I like the best. For instance, at first I planned to add only one rose on the band but then changed my mind.

The dress is very feminine. It has classic pattern, nice fitting and light vintage charm. I feel comfortable in it as if it really was created for me:-)

The necklace, earrings and ring were made specially for the outfit.
My niece inspires me not only to make clothes... I learn from her never postpone doing things I want to do... Probably being at her age I was as wise then became an adult and lost that ability to rejoice at simple things right here and right now. But I try to remember that:-)

Magatama Bracelet, or Mix of Petals

These magatama seed beads are unusual indeed. I looked up the word and the Internet said it means "curved jewel". I guess to design with them is pretty hard - the beads are asymmetrical so either the pattern has to include some reflected elements or just some chaotic arrangements of the beads without any hint to symmetry. I chose the latter one. More than that, as for me, the beads remind petals. And to see the mix of petals to be inspired I only have to step over the porch - and all around is full of such "jewels":-)

For my first magatama project I chose a simple video tutorial from +Potomac Bead Company. On some reason I used peach/tangerine mix of the beads for the embellishment and for the peyote base - creamy 6/0.

Having enough 6/0 at first I made the base for eight seed beads, embellished it with magatamas, made a clasp from a big bead and a seed bead loop. But my 15 grams of magatamas was not enough for all the bracelet. The result turned out to be very rough so I unpicked it to remake.

The second try was much better. I made the peyote base for six 6/0 seed beads. This time 15 grams of magatamas were enough and I even have 7 beads left:-)
One more very essential note. It is better to add the clasp right after finishing the peyote base because then it will be troubling to pull the needle and especially to weave the ends of the thread.

The bracelet is very cheerful in its colour style and playful in its design and inspiring  to go on working with the "curved jewels":-))

3/4 Sleeve Tunic, or East Trace II

Imagination is a strange thing... for example, when learning at school I couldn't imagine what is electromagnetic induction, and I don't believe in any paranormal phenomena because I am sure that if something is impossible to explain, it means it was not studied enough yet. However, I can imagine easily that the things can live their own life... Of course, most likely we endow them with our own unconscious will... Well, what I am talking about.. all that is about the fabrics and other materials for handmade creativity and their wish to become useful things:-)
For instance, it happens if some fabric is bought for making a certain outfit, anything different is possible to sew in no way. But it often happens vice versa. Still being wrapped in the memories about life in the East I was looking through my stash and came across a pretty old piece of staple with paisley print. It was purchased for sewing some blouse but many years the project was postponed on unknown reasons. I guess just because that piece wanted to become this tunic instead of that blouse :-) I. e., it as if decided itself what I really wanted to make from it :-)

So, the pattern #107/108 from the special for me Burda 4/2016. I made something between two models. The tunic was cut for all the length I could afford on the fabric (and it is 10 cm shorter than the dress but much longer than the tunic in the magazine). I also added a collar and made the cuffs on the sleeves.

There is nothing complex in the sewing. As my fabric very colourful, I even had an idea to refuse from the plackets and just to process the neck hole with the facing. But then changed my mind. I don't rememeber when made such a placket last time so decided to have some practice to refresh the skill. Besides, the brightness of the material lets hide the fails of this work:-)
To sew the placket start with three steps, reinforce the corners of the slit on the front, pin and baste the plackets and stitch them.

Then the plackets must be joined. At this step it is worthy to check the length of the ready slit. I shortened mine for 2 cm.

After the plackets turned out and stitched. The short cut must be done in the corners to the very end of the seam to arrange  neatly the short edge of the placket on the wrong side. Then stitch it right from one corner to the other.

Then the short edge can be processed either with bias binding (if you want haute couture) or overlocked (as I did) :-)

As usual, at first I sewed the inner collar to the wrong side of the neck hole, then outer collar to the right side of the neck hole. I always work in this way to avoid hand stitching as more as possible (for the plackets it is the same). But nobody obliged to follow this way and can just follow the instruction.

The side slits are made like in this shirt.
As you see on the photo, the tunic is pretty wide but it is not loose in shoulders so I wouldn't recommend to make it narrower - the comfort of the wearing can be lost.
My last earrings match greatly to the outfit.

Long-sleeved Top, or East Poetry

My last year blabbing about Morocco is still actual and this year has some unexpected continuation. But this fresh one is not so certain about a definite place... I'd rather say it is some mixture of memories, half real and half fancied images spelled by unpredictable talks about...  hmm... Azerbaijan poetry.
There was a conversation about words, their value and wasting, and their abilities to express ideas and emotions. And suddenly my mum remembered how ornately and diverse people describe their feelings in Nizami Ganjavi poems. The five volumes of his poetry were the first books bought when we came to live in Azerbaijan and my mum is the only one in my family who read them all!!! At my teens I had no much interest in such books so read none of them but the topic evidently brought me back to sweet age and the wonderful places I visited while living there.
What else one needs to be inspired to creativity... maybe to look through old photos and say to oneself, "I was there, I loved that, I wish I could see that once again some day."
The necklace and the earrings were made especially to match the top.

(The pictures of Shaki Palace is from the family photo album and the book Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan )

For the inspiration all the above said is enough but to make such a top the matching fabric is necessary as well:-)
Fortunately, I had it, the piece of knits with intricate East pattern :-) And for such a fabric the ideal model is with as few seams as possible. For example, #128 from Burda 12/2013.

Burda 12/2013.

There is not much work to sew here, the main and most troubling part is the arrangement of the details on the fabric and the cutting.
At first you should choose the centre of symmetry. As you see I decided to cut the top across.
Besides, if you have no magazine, you can do without a paper pattern at all. Use a folded along the centre T-shirt. You also can vary the length of the sleeve on your wish. The top is supposed to have cuffs but you can  just lengthen the sleeve, in this case you'll have much more leftovers so cuffs save your fabric.
Then fold the fabric along the chosen centre, pin two layers by the fabric pattern placements. Only then arrange the paper patten and cut the details.

The top is a quick and simple project  but  very significant.

One more detail about my sewing. I processed the neck hole with the facings. In my opinion it always looks neat and steady. I forgot to take the picture of the cutting the facing but I told how to do it in this project already.
The top has a "boat" neck hole so when sewing the facings, left their seam allowances unstitched to avoid bulging in the corners after turning the top out.

The sleeve is said to be longer than usual for 5 cm but it is too wide to stay where it is supposed to be. So after trying the top on I shortened the cuff for 9 cm.

Old Castle Earrings

Today we had (and still have!) a windy day. And the morning was so chilly that reminded vividly about the approaching season's change. I am ready to it in no way! This my summer was so splendid with the things it gave to me! For example, my list of visited Ukrainian castles, Akkerman and Lubart's, was enriched with two more - Kamyanets-Podilsky and Khotyn. I enjoyed wandering about those places so much and wish had had more time to stay there... On the other hand the list far from being ended so hope to go on some day:-)

Probably right because I was so much in those trips when I saw these earrings from +Moonrose creation, they put me back to my dreamt sights.
So I couldn't but yield the temptation to make them:-)
I used the same rivolis and bicones, instead of the super duos, took twins and instead of 11/0 seed beads - 10/0 of two different colours.

Then some magic spells and hands waving and voila! I wish to halt summer would be so easy:-)

Twin Beaded Bead, or Pineapple Earrings

The earrings make up a nice set with the necklace from the previous post and their colour style does wake up the vision of the evening coming down on a seacoast. But their shape makes me think about absolutely other things:-) Firstly, about a certain kind of lamps, secondly, about a dried poppy and thirdly, about a pineapple. And the last variant seems to be the most attractive right now:-)

Once upon a time I saw a beautiful pair of earrings on the Beadingdaily site, they were called Tulip Mania. Why I rememebered them, is hard to say because after looking through tons of photos and videos, actually all what you saw gets blurring. But this pair was lucky, or I was lucky not to forget it.
So having some beading skills now I thought I would be able to make them myself without any pattern. I am glad I feel myself so self-confident about my beading already:-) Fianlly after few hours of work, the earrings turned out to be just a great source of inspiration and I made my own pair:-)

How to is here.

Twin Spiral, or Seacoast Evening

I like making projects from the beads which I cannot buy at my city... Maybe right because of this reason:-) Almost as in that poem about the weather "man is a fool..... he always wants what he has not":-) But when it goes about my beading, it means that I should plan less or more exactly what I am going to create so that to buy matching materials wherever I find them. As I am a person of chaos and do beading as a hobby, it is not easy and typical for me to predict my possible project in advance. That's why the materials happen to wait for indefinite time to be used. For example, these twins were bought several months ago but the idea of the necklace ripened only now under the influence of my summer trip to the sea.

The idea was to use the twins to make a spiral necklace. Such kind of the spiral I already made for this project and as I had twins of the same colour style but different hues it was a good choice. I also wanted the necklace to fit close to the neck. Besides, you can see the zigzag pattern formed by the beads. You get it if you bead one spiral  "from you" and the other "to you" (as if to the right / to the left).

To join a clasp is the hardest moment here. Mostly because I wanted the necklace to look as one piece although made of three. So I made both the spirals and the loops on the ends of different length.

To make the necklace took me about 43 - 45 grams of twins of each colour. Nice result and great temptation to have more  stashed materials to realise any idea without thinking if you have enough beads for it.... Very dangerous temptaion, by the way...:-))

Twin Rings

For the person who is not a fan of wearing rings I am quite productive in making them:-) This is my fourth ring project and it contains two samples together just because to call a project the pyramid ring wasn't modest:-)

The first ring by +beadifulnights video has long history because was planned to be made in May but the absence of the experience postponed my intention. My materials were those benzol twins, 10/0 seed beads, 4 mm pearls and 4 mm bicone. I like the design, of course, otherwise I wouldn't make it. But on the step of adding pearls and bicones I made a mistake. I decided the bicone would look brighter and placed it between the pearls but it was a wrong idea. Now these pearls as if eyes of an unknown creature are staring at me and wondering why I didn't bead 1 bicone, 1 pearl, 1 bicone... I wish I knew, too...

Being plunged into beading the ring I remembered about this video from +Potomac Bead Company that uses super duos (I use twins) for making a ring. As I have few pyramid beads in stash and this project used to catch my eye as well it turned out to be the right moment to test the pattern. It took me less than half an hour to make it but the  result was more pleasant. What I made different: in the edge rows I alternated adding one/ two seed beads because adding two every time made the edges slight ruffled.

That's all. Because of the same materials the rings are paired well with this bracelet.
