OKSAMYT OKSANA Trousers:-)

In Ukrainian velvet is "oksamyt" and obviously I couldn't keep myself from the temptation to use this wordplay for my new project's name :-) By the way, "velvet" in Ukrainian is English "curdoroy":-))
Velvet, together with different kinds of silk, is not the material desiring to become clothes. Probably, the producers have never told velvet that it is just textile and that any tailor is able to find the tricks to tame this fabric to transfer it in apparel anyway.
The chances to subdue velvet are pretty big. The main thing is to mind its features and repeat oneself as a refrain how luxurious the fabric is and how noble the new outfit will look when is ready. And forget about the nonsense doubts if  velvet is in fashion or not. It is classic material and classics is always timeless. The only reason to make choice whether to sew or not to sew is if the fabric pleases you or not. For instance, I like it.  I can't say I worked a lot with it but I certainly know the behaviour of its main kinds while being sewed.

The hat, mittens and the earrings are this year projects as well as the pants.

Оксамит, подібно до більшості різновидів шовку, це  не той матеріал, що мріє стати одягом. Мабуть, виробники ніколи йому не казали, що він - тканина і що будь яка кравчиня завжди знайде прийомчики, як ту тканину приборкати, щоб вона все ж таки перетворилася на вбрання:-)
Шанси підкорити оксамит є, головне - зважати на його особливості і в процесі роботи постійно нагадувати собі, яка ж ця тканина розкішна і як шляхетно виглядатиме наша обновка. А ще не забивати голову різними дурницями про те, чи він модний чи ні. Це класична тканина, а класика завжди поза часом, тому єдиний критерій, коли вирішуєш "шити, чи не шити" - наскільки оксамит тобі подобається. Мені, наприклад, подобається. Не можу сказати, що я багато з ним працювала, але напевно знаю, як поводяться його основні види в роботі.

On my way of making my stash empty I came across a small piece of black velvet, that stored there not less than 20 years  so it is the right time to use its leftover.  There used to be a whole roll of it: in the 90s' crises our people sometimes got the salary with different goods instead of money and this velvet appeared in the house exactly in this way. I already sewed and worn a pair of trousers from it and about three or four years ago made a waistcoat so there  seemed to be enough remnants to make cropped pants or, as they are called, capris.  Although they are pretty comfy for summer, I don't like such kind of trousers very much: they shorten  legs visually so suit only long-legged tall women. In cold seasons they look much more ugly especially when wearing with shoes or boots. But I decided to pretend I knew nothing about that and if to wear them with high boots, my consciousness will stay clear.
I found long ago chosen pattern #109B from Burda 9/2002 and started working.

На шляху по спустошенню моїх старих запасів я натрапила на маленький відріз оксамиту, який зберігався у мене не менш 20 років, тому якраз настав час використати його залишки.  Цілий рулон цього оксамиту з'явився в будинку, коли в кризові 90-ті деякі люди отримували зарплатню не грошима, а товарами: це був якраз такий випадок. Я якось вже пошила з нього і зносила пару штанів, а десь роки три-чотири тому зробила жилет, а того, що лишилося здалося достатньо для пошиття коротких звужених штанців, які ще називають капрі. Хоча вони досить зручні для літа, я такий фасон не люблю: вони пасують лише довгоногим високим жінкам, бо візуально вкорочують ноги. В холодну пору року вони виглядають ще потворніше, особливо, якщо вдягти їх з черевиками чи туфлями. Але я вирішила прикинутися наче мені нічого такого невідомо і якщо вдягатиму їх з високими чоботами, то моє сумління залишатиметься чистим.
Отже знайшла давно відібрану модель №109 з Burda 9/2002 і приступила до роботи.

The first stumble moment with velvet is cutting. It is because of pile, or to be exact, its direction. I still don't know those rules; to define how to cut the fabric right - just hang the piece and see where it gives nice saturated colour, then draw few arrows on the wrong side along the length of the fabric and keep that direction while cutting.


Перша пастка у роботі з оксамитом - крій. Через його ворс, чи точніше, через напрямок ворсу. Я ті правила так і не вивчила: щоб визначити, в якому напрямку кроїти, просто повішай тканину і подивись в якому напрямку вона дає яскравий насичений колір, потім на вивороті намалюй декілька стрілок по довжині тканини і притримуйся цього напрямку поки кроїтимеш. 

Next stop to think is the width of the fabric. In old times they produced some textile very narrow. For example, my piece was just 68 cm wide. I am surely not the one who can cut trousers from this quantity of fabric. So we'll do the same what our grannies did: add some kind of  triangular insert to the back half of the pants. The technology allows us to do that so why not to use this trick to save fabric or to have the trousers fit.

Наступна проблема - ширина тканини. В старі часи деякі тканини виробляли дуже вузькими. Наприклад, мій відріз всього 68 см завширшки. Щоб викроїти штанці на мене, цього точно не досить. Тому робимо те, що робили наші бабусі: додамо такий собі трикутний клин до задньої половинки. Технологія нам дозволяє це зробити, то чому б ні, якщо можна зекономити тканину або щоб штани нам були по фігурі.

Using the example of this insert, it is worthy and necessary to talk about sewing the fabric. The velvet pile makes the main problem here. And the higher the pile the more troublesome the sewing is because the layers of the fabric always try to displace from the seam line. To prevent that it is good both to baste the details with diagonal stitch and have seam allowances pinned while sewing on the machine.

На прикладі цієї вставки, варто і необхідно поговорити про зшивання самої тканини. Ворс оксамиту - тут головна проблема і чим він вищий, тим більше мороки, тому що шари тканини повсякчас намагаються зміститись. Щоб цьому запобігти, краще заметувати деталі косим стібком і залишати булавки  в припусках на шви, поки строчиш на машинці.

And the most important part is ironing the velvet. I exactly know there is a special device for it. I don't know its English term and not going to look it up because I have never seen and used it in reality, only read in the manuals on Technology. I also once tried to use a towel as a cloth for ironing but it should be with high pile as well and very stiff otherwise you'll get pressed shining pile. So what I do. I use an ordinary clothes brush to put under right side of the fabric. It is not so quick to iron then but if you are not going to make costumes for crowd scenes of a historical saga, you have a plenty of time to have your outfit well-looking. The temperature depends on the kind of your velvet (cotton, silk or synthetic), steam it a little.

І найголовніше - прасування оксамиту. Є такий спеціальний пристрій, мабуть, українською кардострічка ("кардолєнта" рос.), але я і не збираюся шукати, як правильно, тому що я ніколи в житті її не бачила і не користувалась, а лише читала про неї в підручнику з технології. Також одного разу я спробувала скористатися рушником, щоб підкласти для прасування, але він має бути з високим ворсом і дуже жорстким, інакше лас не уникнути. Що я роблю. Підкладаю під оксамит звичайну щітку для одягу. Прасування не дуже швидке в такому випадку, але ж ти не збираєшся шити костюми для масовки історичної саги, тому у тебе купа часу, щоб надати своєму вбранню гарний вигляд. Температура залежить від виду оксамиту (чи він на бавовняній, шовковій, чи на синтетичній основі), пара помірна.

As my piece of velvet was really small I also had to shorten the length of the capris for 2 cm and made the facing for the processing the hem. I used some remnants of wool ( I guess it also will be nice to make it of different colour) for that.

Оскільки мій відріз і справді був дуже маленьким, мала кроїти штанці коротшими на 2 см, а для обробки низу кроїти обшивку. Для цього знайшла рештки тонкого сукна (думаю, буде також непогано зробити її іншого кольору).

There is nothing special with this work. To make it easier at first sew the facing to the bottom, then the side seams of the pants and only then turn the facing out.  Sew the inner edge of the facing to the pants with a slip stitch, you are not obliged to make the stitch perfect because velvet is ideal fabric to cover any fails with it.

Нічого особливого в цій роботі немає. Єдине, щоб спростити роботу, спочатку приший обшивку до низу штанин, потім бокові шви, а потім вже вивертай і виметуй обшивку. Відлітний край обшивку приший потайним стібком, при цьому можна не прагнути досконалості виконання, бо оксамит - ідеальна тканина, щоб приховати його недоліки.

I also cut the band for the trousers from the same wool. It is sewed in my usual way: at first inner side, then outer side with top stitching. I already told about it a lot, e.g. here. My only notion as for this certain project. I made the band in full and then sewed a zipper to the pants as if it was the single piece. It is not very professional but it surely decreases the number of the fabric layers and іt is very good for such pants.
I recommend to sew loops in the band seam to hang the pants to avoid the further pile pressing on the folds of the fabric.

З того ж самого сукна я покроїла і пояс штанів. Пришивала у звичний для мене спосіб: спочатку внутрішню частину, а потім зовнішню з подальшим відстрочуванням оздоблювальним стібком. Я вже багато про це розповідала, наприклад, тут. Моє зауваження стосовно цього певного виробу. Я пришила пояс повністю і потім пришила блискавку до штанів, як до однієї деталі. Це не дуже професійно, але зменшує кількість шарів тканини, що для таких штанів дуже добре.
Рекомендую також пришити петлі в шов пояса, щоб вішати виріб для запобігання утворення лас на загинах.

Sewing a zipper to the velvet is not enjoyment as well. The enjoyment is the final result with less trouble:-) Without long story I can say that you can sew zipper with hands. It will be quick and neat and thanking to the pile not very noticeable. Maybe modern sewing machine can do it themselves instead of a seamstress, mine is not so skillful:-)
I removed a zipper to the side seam, and applied a usual one for the pants not the invisible one. Just to provide my calm life without fear to fix the zipper in future or if I ever need, to make it quicker.
Besides, the upper part of the zipper was sewed from the wrong side because I couldn't make it stay still. The result is not bad. It would be even better if I sewed with black threads instead of dark dark khaki. But it was the strongest tread I had at that moment so I have no remorse about this.

Пришивання блискавки до оксамиту - також не велике задоволення. Задоволення - це досягти гарного результату з мінімальними труднощами. Щоб не розповідати довгих історій, одразу можу сказати, що це можна зробити вручну.  Це буде швидко, охайно і не дуже помітно завдяки ворсу. Можливо, сучасні швейні машини роблять це саме замість кравчинь, але моя не така вміла :-)
Я перенесла блискавку  в боковий шов і втачала звичайну брючну замість потайної. Просто щоб забезпечити собі подальше спокійне життя без остраху ремонту блискавки або, якщо знадобиться, щоб зробити це швидко.
Крім того, верхню частину блискавки я пристрочила по зворотній стороні, тому що не змогла  втримати її на місті. Результат непоганий, а був би ще кращий, якби я шила нитками чорного кольору замість темного темного хакі. Але це були найміцніші нитки, які мала під рукою на той момент, тому не маю жодних докорів сумління.

A couple words about the waistcoat. Pattern #122 from Burda 9/2006. As I have no pictures of work on it, I only can say it turned out to be a good stash booster for the remnants of lining (it very often happens to my waistcoats) and to make it warmer all the lining was doubled with padding polyester.

Декілька слів про жилет. Модель №122 з Burda 9/2006. Оскільки немає фото роботи над нею, просто скажу, що на виріб згодились залишки підкладочних тканин (з моїми жилетками таке постійно трапляється) і щоб зробити її теплішою, вона була повністю дубльована синтепоном.
