About Me
- Oksana Starzhynska
- My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Dots & Roses, or Polka Dot Dress
The most feminine in our family is my five-year-old niece. Her mother let me post here the photo that would explain all I want to say about my choice of the fabric for this dress but I had no chance to see the girl these days to take a picture so the explanation will be quite long:-) As a real princess, she's got a big wardrobe... it seems to be much bigger than mine... and among her dresses my favourite is the dark blue one with white dots:-) Obviously when I came across the linen with the same print, I couldn't leave the store without it.
To make the dress I used Simplicity pattern 2442 from Diana Moden 2/2012. And to embroider the roses I used our Ukrainian production motifs on water-soluble vliseline.
As I've mentioned above, my fabric is linen and this one is thick enough so I refused from the lining. All the front details were cut from the main fabric and for back I cut the facing. To cut the facing you need to outline the back detail on the piece of the fabric, to draw the inner outline for 5-6 cm from the outer and cut it. As the facing doesn't cover all the back, my dress's side seam looks like that on the third photo.
The first motif was cross-stitched on the back. If you want to embellish your outfit with embroidery, it is absolutely right at first to embroider the details after the cutting and only then sew them. I did wrong, it means I made that after the bodice was ready. Because I just didn't know exactly where I wanted to have those roses. So broke the rule.
Joining the bodice and the skirt. Simplicity drew the waist line for three cm lower than the top edge of the skirt. I don't know why, probably to give a chance to correct it according to the figure. For me it was right to cut 1.5 cm from the edge, then to draw the new waist line for 1.5 cm from the new edge again. And then for the better fitting I deepened front in the very centre for about 1 cm more and drew the final waist line (thick arrows point it on the low photo).
It is clear enough the front embroidery was made in the wrong way too. I made it after all the dress was ready. In this way I could try the dress on and pin the motifs many times in different variants to see which of them I like the best. For instance, at first I planned to add only one rose on the band but then changed my mind.
The necklace, earrings and ring were made specially for the outfit.
