Artist's Friend Scarf

 

The story of this outfit, made up of the dress and the scarf, is quite long and has deep roots but I'll start telling it with a short introduction devoted to the accessory:-) Doing some crocheting, while hiding during air alarms among two armchairs and a sofa in our living room, turned out to be a good idea because I can do it lying on the floor. So I thought as I was going to make this outfit sooner or later, why not to start it this summer. Thus from the remnants of YarnArt Lily yarn the scarf appeared without any hint for haste:-)

 

Шарф "Подружка художника" 

Історія цього вбрання доволі довга і має глибоке коріння, але я почну її розповідати з короткого вступу присвяченого аксесуарові:-) Виявилося, що ховаючись під час повітряних тривог між кріслами і диваном в нашій вітальні, можна успішно плести гачком, тому що це я можу робити лежачи на підлозі. Тож, я подумала, якщо рано чи пізно все одно збираюся створювати це вбрання, чому ж не почати цього літа. Так з залишків пряжі YarnArt Lily без жодного натяку на поспіх з'явився цей шарф:-) 

The scarf made by Drops Design pattern162-7. Strange thing happen while it was crocheted. I had two leftover skeins of the yarn and decided just to crochet as long as the yarn is over. The scarf is made from the centre to the ends. But when the first half was ready, and I started the second one, they turned to be as if made of different yarns! The first was thin and skinny, the second - dense and full. Even after blocking  they are still of different length. Two repeats of the pattern rapports - 6 cm in my scarf. The length of the scarf together with the fringe is about 230 cm. It is exactly what I wanted. 

Шарф сплетений за моделлю 162-7 від Drops Design. Під час плетіння трапилася дивна річ. У мене було два мотки залишків пряжі і я вирішила плести шарф такої довжини, наскільки вистачить пряжі. Шарф плететься від середини до кінців. Але коли закінчила першу половину і почала другу, виявилося що половинки наче з двох різних пряж! Перша - тоненька і благенька, а друга половина - щільна і наповнена. Навіть після відпарювання вони залишилися різної довжини. Два повтори рапорту візерунку - 6 см мого шарфу. Довжина шарфу разом зі своєрідними китицями - приблизно 230 см. Це саме те, що я хотіла.

Evening Breath Shawl

 

One last summer evening the chilly night breeze provoked  my dreaming about a light shawl. I also was pondering about its real necessity and the story ended with the sewing a jeans jacket:-) So this year I yielded the temptation to test new yarn Diva Ombre Batik from Alize  and crocheted such a shawl. A little less than two months ago I called at our local hobby store and the girls offered to take a look at some gorgeous yarn. I am always ready to know what new they have and wanted a skein at once. The problem of choice because of great variety of the colours couldn't be solved at that very moment as I wanted most of them :-) So I took a photo of all the palette and came back to purchase in a day or two. Even now I cannot say why I chose this hue of violet... maybe just because I couldn't remember if I have any clothes in this colour :-)

 

On the photo the shawl is in pair with the jumpsuit, which turned to be the ideal showcase for it, Colour of the Rain earrings, which are an occasional choice here, and Twin Wrap bracelet. 

 

Шаль "Подих вечору" 

Одного літнього вечора минулого року прохолодний вечірній бриз навіяв мені думки про легку шаль. Також я міркувала, чи вона мені справді так вже і потрібна. Історія закінчилася пошиттям джинсового жакету :-) Тож цього року я поступилася спокусі спробувати нову пряжу Diva Ombre Batik від Alize і сплела таку шаль гачком. Трохи менше ніж два місяці тому забігла на хвилинку до нашої місцевої крамнички для рукотворниць і дівчата запропонувала поглянути на неймовірну пряжу. Я завжди готова дізнатися що у них є новенького і одразу закортіло мати її моточок. Через велике розмаїття кольорів проблему вибору одразу розв'язати було неможливо, тому що забажала більшість з них:-) Я сфотографувала всю палітру і повернулася заради покупки за день чи два. Навіть зараз не можу сказати, чому обрала саме цей відтінок бузкового... можливо лише через те, що не могла згадати чи є у мене одяг в таких кольорах:-) 

На фото шаль доповнює комбінезон, який став для неї ідеальною вітриною, сережки "Колір дощу", які тут опинилися випадково, та браслет-обгортка з твінів.

The work started with crocheting a swatch and, after that, choosing a pattern. I crocheted three samples and stopped at the Evening Breath shawl pattern from DropsDesign. I started crocheting from the inside end of the thread and had no idea if it would be enough yarn to have a quite big item to wrap in it. I didn't find any piece of advice as for that. 

Робота розпочалася з плетіння зразку для розрахування щільності плетіння і, після цього, вибору моделі. Я сплела три зразки і зупинилася на моделі Evening Breath від DropsDesign. Почала плести з внутрішнього кінця моточку і не мала уявлення чи мені вистачить на виріб достатньо великий, щоб в нього загорнутися. Жодної поради щодо цього я не знайшла.

The work was going quickly and it took me probably a fortnight to finish the crocheting. Before blocking the size of the shawl was about 140 x 70 cм. 

Робота пішла швидко і десь за два тижні плетіння було завершено. До відпарювання розмір шалі був приблизно 140 x 70 cm.

Colour Block Brioche Super Scarf

It is knitting time again and, despite the season is not over yet, I have already got a new scarf :-) It was not difficult to knit but took some time to make - two weeks. There was none source of inspiration for making it but wish to wrap oneself into something soft and cosy and rejoice in diversity of colours. As for the latter I have some consideration, though... I could never understand why when it is getting colder, the weather stops being pleasant and the nature loses colours, people prefer wearing dark clothes. Crowds of us, worn in black grey brown & Co look not lively. And surely observing that doesn't add cheerfulness to the daily routine. So, to some degree, this my project is my investment into the idea of painting the cold and gloomy winter world :-) On my Ravelry profile I have a pile of favourite models with the tag #technique. There are many of them which I've never tried but hope to do one day so this scarf became an excellent chance and practice to learn a new kind of knitting for me. I guess I can say I posess it now well enough:-) The outcome is quite awesome, isn't it? 

Шарф  у техніці бріош "Кольорові блоки"

Знову настав час плетіння, і хоча сезон ще не закінчився, у мене вже є новий шарф:-) Плести було не важко, але трохи часу зайняло - два тижні. Жодних джерел натхнення, крім бажання загорнутися у щось м'якеньке і затишне та порадувати себе розмаїттям кольорів, не було. Хоча, щодо останнього, у мене є деякі міркування... Ніколи не могла зрозуміти, чому, коли стає холодніше, погода припиняє бути приємною, а природа втрачає фарби, люди надають перевагу темним кольорам. Натовпи нас, одягнутих у чорне, темно-сіре, коричневе і таке подібне, не виглядають аж надто життєрадісно. І це вже напевно, не додає бадьорості  щоденній рутині. Тож, до певної міри, цей проект - мій вклад у розфарбовування холодного і похмурого світу зими :-) На сайті Ravelry у мене є купа вподобаних моделей з маркуванням #technique. Технік, яких я ніколи не пробувала, але сподіваюся хоч колись освоїти, там багатенько, тож цей шарф став ще і прекрасною нагодою навчитися плести і оволодіти новим для мене видом плетіння. Думаю, можна вважати, що попрактикувалася доволі добре:-) Результат чудовий, чи не так ?

The idea and the model was taken on Drops design site. The technique has at least two names: brioche and, more clear and known for me since childhood, English ribs. 

Ідею і модель було запозичено на Drops design site. Техніка має щонайменше дві назви: бріош і, більш зрозуміла і знайома мені з дитинства, англійскі реберця ("резинка"). 

I've never tried it before despite knowing about it since started knitting. So at first I had to learn. The tutorials for both kinds (mono and two-coloured) techniques can be found on the same page with the scarf pattern. I took big knitting needles and made a sample, cannot say it was perfect from the first try as well as from the second:-) 

Ніколи не пробувала її, хоча і знаю про неї з того часу, як почала плести. Тож спочатку довелося навчитися. Майстер класи для обох видів техніки (одно- і двокольорової) знаходяться на тій самій сторінці, що і модель. я взяла великі спиці і зробила зразок, не можу сказати, що він був досконалий з першого разу, так само як і з другого.

The scarf itself was knitted with knitting needles 4.5. While knitting I also find the own way to define the colour of the next row. At first, I tried to put off my work only when both threads were on the same side, then the advice to start with the colour different from the edge stitch worked indeed. But then I saw that the last row always has two one after another stitches of the same colour so the next one must be knitted with the other. 

Сам шарф сплетений на спицях № 4,5. Поки плела, також винайшла власний спосіб визначати колір наступного ряду. Спочатку намагалася відкладати роботу лише коли обидві нитки були з одного боку, тоді порада починати з кольору протилежного крайній петлі спрацьовувала. Але потім зрозуміла, що останній ряд має завжди дві підряд петлі одного кольору, тож наступний треба плести протилежним.

The size of my scarf is 2.85 m x 32 cm (if to stretch 38 cm). I also cannot but thank Eva Maria Keiser Designs who knows everything about colour combinations :-)

Розмір мого шарфу 2.85 м x 32 cм (якщо розтягнути - 38 см). Також не можу не подякувати Eva Maria Keiser Designs,  яка знає все про комбінування кольорів:-)

Poinsettia Scarf (Crochet)

The scarf is not new but, as it is as symbolic as any other Christmas feature for me, I decided to write a couple of words about it. The reason is simple. The last day of Christmas, which is on January 19 here, promised to be full of fun. I was invited to celebrate it with my friends who do bathe into the winter river on this day. It is a tradition connected with the Baptism of Jesus which is called here Vodokhreshche or Jordan (after the name of the River). Despite I am pretty old I have never taken part in that so would join the company with pleasure at least as a spectator:-) But I got a cold and had to stay at home so, to entertain myself, decided to devote a post to this Poinsettia scarf which I wear during all the festive month from December 19 to January 19. 

On the photo the scarf is paired with the green dress from the previous post.

Шарф "Пуансетія" (гачком)

Шарф не новий, але, оскільки для мене є такою самою ознакою Різдва як і будь який інший його символ, я вирішила написати про нього пару слів. Причина проста. Водохреще цього року обіцяло бути веселим. Перший раз мене запросили відсвяткувати його з друзями, які справді в цей день купаються у зимовій річці. Хоча мені і багато років, я таке бачила лише в телевізорі, тож із задоволенням приєдналася б до товариства хоча б у якості глядача:-) Але я дуже застудилася і мала залишитися вдома, тож, щоб розважити себе і вирішила присвятити допис цьому шарфові, з такою гарною назвою "Пуансетія", який я надягаю весь святковий місяць з 19 грудня до 19 січня. 

На фото шарф доповнює зелену сукню з попереднього допису.

The scarf was crocheted many years ago, to be exact seven... Oh!... I knew it because on the Ravelry all the projects are dated. Its age only says about its quality because the scarf still looks beautiful, attracts attention and makes the spirit bright:-) The pattern from Kim Guzman can be taken here now. The scarf looks very festive and decorative indeed but it is not so warm as it wish to be. So to protect the neck from cold, it is desirable to wear some turtle neck sweater under the coat, then the scarf will be good to wear not only with a dress:-)

Шарф сплетений багато років тому... сім... Ого!... це точно... Я це знаю, тому що на Ravelry всі роботи датовані. Його вік промовляє на його користь та про його якість, тому що шарф все ще привертає увагу та підтримує святковий настрій:-) Зараз цю модель від Kim Guzman можна загрузити звідси. Шарф насправді виглядає дуже нарядно і святково, але він не такий теплий як хотілося б. Тому, щоб захистити шию від холоду, бажано вдягати светр з коміром гольф під пальто, тоді шарф можна надягати не лише із сукнею:-)

While crocheting I made some changes. Firstly, I remember that I was excited with the work that made 12 motifs so my scarf is longer than the sample pattern. Secondly, let me quote from my Ravelry profile, I added an extra row that "made the square look neater: sc in every stitch of the last row and 5 sc in every corner tr. Besides, I also crocheted the edging: began with 4ch in the corner dtr, 1dc in the first loop of the chain, skip two sc of the last row, repeat". And, thirdly, I had no idea about the beading in those times and it cohfused me so my scarf has no beads inside the centre of the flowers. 

Поки я його плела, трохи змін додалося. По-перше, мене це тоді так захопило, що я сплела 12 мотивів, тому мій шарф довший ніж у зразку. По-друге, процитую з мого допису на Ravelry, "я додала ряд, завдяки чому квадрат виглядає охайніше: сбн в кожний ст останнього ряду і 5 сбн в кожний куток з стз1н. Крім того, шарф я обв'язала по краю: почала з 4 петель ланцюжку в кутовий стз2н, 1 стз1н в першу петлю ланцюжка, пропустити 2 стбн останнього ряду, повторити". І, по-третє, в ті часи я нічого не знала про бісероплетіння, воно мене бентежило, тому мій шарф не має бісерин в середині квіток.

These were very nice holidays. I guess I am ready to start dreaming about the next :-)

Ці свята були справді гарними... Думаю, я вже готова мріяти про наступні :-)

Fairisle Scarf, or Travelling Arrows II

It took me just two weeks to make it and I do like the outcome. And it happened earlier than I made few more trips around my country:-) So the travelling project from this post transformed into the finished one and today's post devoted to it will be without any stories: I just share my new achievement :-) Despite I had to refuse from the idea of making the cowl and got the scarf it is just fabulous :-) 

Шарф "Стрілки у мандрах"

У мене пішло всього два тижні, щоб закінчити цю роботу і мені справді подобається результат. І це відбулося раніше ніж мені пощастило здійснити ще декілька подорожей моєю країною:-) Тож мандруючий проект з цього допису перетворився на закінчений і сьогоднішній присвячений йому допис, буде без жодних історій. Я просто ділюся своїм новим досягненням :-) Хоча довелося відмовитися від ідеї снуду і у мене вийшов шарф, він - неймовірний :-)

After the second repeating I already remembered the pattern and the work went quicker. After the forth repeating the pattern the length of the piece was enough to lock it in a cowl of one turn around my neck.  I hesitated. I thought that this cowl is too warm to wear it only as a nice accessory as it won't cover the neckhole of the coat. Besides, I would have some remnants of the yarn again. On the other hand, there was not enough yarn left to make four more repeats of the pattern for turning the cowl twice around the neck. So I decided to knit as long piece as possible for the amount of the yarn and then make a scarf.

Після другого повтору візерунку я його запам'ятала і робота пішла швидше. Після четвертого повтору довжини виробу було достатньо, щоб замкнути її в снуд. Я вагалася. Подумала, що такий снуд буде занадто теплий, щоб його носити просто як гарний аксесуар, оскільки він не закриватиме вирізу пальта. Крім того, у мене знову залишилася пряжа. З іншого боку, пряжі було недостатньо, щоб сплести ще чотири повтори візерунку для подвійного оберту навколо шиї. Тому вирішила плести виріб на всю можливу довжину пряжі, а потім зробити шарф.

To finish the scarf I joined the every end of it flatly, then knitted three rows of garter stitch. Then added one row: k3, yo1 alternately to get the slightest ruffle. Then one more row of garter stitch and then cast off.

Щоб закінчити плетіння, з'єднала кожний кінець виробу пласко, потім пров'язала три ряди шовковим візерунком. Потім додала один рід: 3л, 1накид по черзі, щоб вийшла легенька шлярка. Потім ще один ряд шовковий і потім закрила всі ряди.

The ready scarf is about 17 x 100 cm. It is very warm and absolutely snug. It feels as if silky to the body and looks smart. I hope to wear it with pleasure. Besides, it will always be associated with my wonderful trip to Baturyn anyway:-)

Готовий шарф має розмір десь 17 х 100 см. Він дуже теплий і надзвичайно затишний. До тіла наче шовковий і виглядає нарядно. Сподіваюся носити його із задоволенням. Крім того, він завжди нагадуватиме мені про мою чудову подорож до Батурина в будь якому разі :-) 

Fairisle Cowl, or Travelling Arrows I

Almost any story can be told either long or quick. I seem to be pretty skillful in both ways of telling:-) This story meant to start in March after my knitting the  Downtown Hat. But it was spring, the hat turned to be too warm for that time of the season so none of new scarves were planned to be made. However, the idea stayed alive and its time came when I registered to travel to the north-east of Ukraine where the weather is supposed mucj colder in October comparing with my locality. So I bought a skein of yellow RAM Angora Yarn to combine with the remnants of the blue from the hat's and among tons of patterns chose this one, Arrow Circle Scarf, to make a cowl right to the trip. I thought the pattern with its numberless arrows pointing destinations matched the general idea of travelling.  Besides, it required only two colours so the work didn't promise to be too troubling.

Снуд з орнаментом, або Стрілки у мандрах

Майже будь яку історію можна розповідати або довго, або швидко. Здається, у мене доволі добре виходять обидва варіанти :-)
Ця історія мала розпочатися ще в березні, щойно я сплела цю шапку  Downtown. Але то була весна, шапка виявилася аж занадто теплою для тої пори року, тож жодних шарфів в доповнення плести не планувалося. Проте, намір залишався і його час настав після того як я зареєструвалася на подорож на північний схід України, де передбачається набагато холодніша погода в жовтні в порівнянні з моєю місцевістю. Тож я купила моток пряжі RAM Angora жовтого кольору, щоб поєднати з залишками синього від шапки і серед тисяч моделей обрала цю, Arrow Circle Scarf, щоб зробити снуд якраз до подорожі. Я подумала, що модель з її численними стрілками, що вказують напрямки, добре відповідає загальній ідеї мандрів. Крім того, вона потребувала всього двох кольорів, тож робота не обіцяла багато клопоту.

The knitting started last Sunday. For the provisional cast-on I used this method . But the stitches from the chain I cast of with a hook, too.



Плетіння почалося минулої неділі. Для специфічного набору петель я скористалася цим методом. Але і з ланцюжка петлі я також набирала гачком.

The pattern is for a scarf but I decided to knit around as soon as I imagined how annoying it would be to see those strands of the treads when wearing the scarf which, no doubt, won't fit around the neck as it looks on the photo.
From the afternoon up to the evening I knitted about two or three cm and during the week before the trip found the time to knit one repeat of the pattern. So after easy counting it became clear that the cowl would be ready about next spring :-) In this way the cowl transferred into a trip project.



Модель для шарфа, але я вирішила плести по колу щойно уявила як мене дратуватиме вигляд протягнутих нитей пряжі поки носиш той шарф, який, без сумніву, не лежатиме так чемно навколо шиї як це виглядає на фото.
Протягом другої половини дня я сплела десь два-три см і протягом тижня перед поїздкою знайшла час сплести один рапорт візерунку. Тож після нескладних підрахунків стало очевидним, що снуд, можливо, буде закінчено наступної весни:-) Таким чином, шарф перетворився на мандруючий проект.

I tried to go on knitting in the train while going to Kyiv. But there was pretty dark inside so I could add only few rows of the next repeat. After train it was a bus trip, and while me and my friend were going to Kozelets, a small town with a splendid cathedral, that impressed with its architecture and unique carved from wood iconostasis of 27 meters height, most of time I was napping.

Я намагалася продовжити в'язання у потязі, але у вагоні було досить темно, тож мені вдалося додати лише декілька рядків другого рапорту. Після потягу, була подорож автобусом і, поки ми з подругою їхали до Козельця, маленького містечка з розкішним собором, який вразив своє. архітектурою та унікальним різьбленим з дерева іконостасом заввишки 27 метрів, я переважно дрімала.

The journey from Kozelets to Kochubey's House was a little longer so I added few more rows to my cowl. While listening to the stories of the house, watching the pictures and the museum's exhibits and then walking around the beautiful autumn park, I forgot about the knitting at all and only felt as if filling with joy inspiration and dreams. Maybe because all the surroundings provoked the lyrical mood, my thoughts were mostly thronging on Mazepa and Motrya's love although it was not the only thing we heard in that place. 

Переїзд з Козельця до будинку Кочубея зайняв трохи більше часу, тож в дорозі я додала ще декілька рядків до снуду. Поки слухала історії про будинок, розглядала картини та музейні експонати, а потім гуляла парком, я зовсім забула про в'язання і відчувала наче наповнююсь радістю, натхненням та мріями. Можливо тому що все навколо занурювало в ліричний настрій, мої думки роїлися переважно навколо кохання Мазепи та Мотрі, хоча це було не єдине про що ми там почули.

The way to Baturyn fortress was very short so the knitting was postponed till ... indefinite time:-)
I shared my impressions for the last two days so much that it hard to find new words so I only can quote myself :-) Trips can be different: in some of them you can enjoy the landscapes, architecture, cuisine, being lazy and relaxed but after some trips you feel as if after reading some very important book. The one that changes your outlook and consciousness... as if you found something missed in the puzzle that you couldn't make the whole life. I was sure that I am as much Ukrainian as it could be but there I saw the people who really made so colossal work to restore and make our past alive that can't but admire them. Baturyn is revived from the ash national treasure and it must be a cult sight for every Ukrainian, the outcome of the scientists and donators' work is worth it indeed.  

Шлях до Батуринської цитаделі був зовсім короткий, тож в'язання було відкладено на ... невизначений термін:-)
Протягом останніх днів я так багато ділилася враженнями, що важко знайти якісь нові слова, тож я можу лише цитувати сама себе:-) Подорожі бувають різні: можна милуватися пейзажами, архітектурою, насолоджуватися лінощами та невідомою кухнею, але після деяких подорожей почуваєшся наче після читання якоїсь дуже важливої книги. Тієї, яка змінює твій світогляд і свідомість... ти наче знаходиш якусь загублену частку пазлу, який не міг скласти ціле життя... Я була впевнена, що я настільки українка, наскільки це можливо, але там я побачила людей, які зробили таку колосальну роботу, щоб відродити та оживити наше минуле, що ними не можна не захоплюватися. Батурин - це відроджений з попелу національний скарб і має бути культовим місцем для кожного українця, результат праці науковців і донаторів справді вартий того. 

After visiting the Rosumovsky Palace and while coming back to Kyiv my knitting got the half of the second repeat. On getting home, I knitted a little more and now already have two repeats. Not bad indeed... if forgot that I need eight generally :-) So I hope the arrows will show many destinations ahead to become a cowl, finally.

Після відвідування Палацу Розумовського і на зворотному шляху до Києва моє плетіння вже мало першу половину другого повтору. По поверненню додому я зв'язала ще трішки і вже маю два повтори. Не погано... якщо забути, що мені їх треба вісім :-) Тож сподіваюся стрілки вказуватимуть ще багато напрямків попереду, щоб зрештою стати снудом.
