Faux Shearling Coat

What to start with... I thought I needed a new coat, a winter one. Because my favourite red is quite old, I gained weigh and at last I wanted to follow the rule, I've known since my study in a sewing school, I mean: to have a red coat, you need one more not to get tired of the red. The idea of such sewing was born in my head a few years ago but if to choose something to sew for routine wearing is sometimes the fuss, to understand what you want for many years of use as outwear confused me much more than a lot.  And still does because the garment I've got is not for too windy or frosty winter days.  When the photos were taken, it was 3 degrees below zero and, although I wasn't cold at the moment, I am not sure how it would go if to stay outdoors for longer time. To say in brief, I made a coat of the fabric I wanted, not the for the aim I needed :-)

Пальто зі штучної замші

З чого ж розпочати... Я подумала, що мені час пошити нове пальто, зимове. Тому що моє улюблене червоне вже доволі старе, я набрала вагу і, нарешті, мені захотілося вчинити відповідно до правила, яке я знаю ще з часів навчання у кравецькій школі,  а саме: щоб мати червоне пальто, треба мати ще одне, щоб не втомлюватися від червоного. Ідея пошиття народилася у мене декілька років тому, але, якщо вибір для пошиття повсякденного звичного одягу іноді стає клопотом, то зрозуміти що ти хочеш, щоб носити як верхній одяг протягом багатьох років, може стати справді морокою. І так воно і досі є. тому що вбрання, яке у мене вийшло, не для надто вітряних та морозних зимових днів. Коли робилися фото, на вулиці було 3 градуси нижче нуля і, хоча я і не змерзла, не впевнена як надовго мене б вистачало, якщо залишилася на свіжому повітрі довше. Скажімо так, я пошила пальто з якої хотіла тканини, а не таке, яке мені було потрібне :-)

Obviously from the said above, the ideas about the patterns were pushed by the fabric and not vice versa. It is not thick faux suede with some kind of faux sheepskin on the wrong side. Looks like a teddy bear skin mostly :-) The fabric is in fact, a kind on knits. While choosing the pattern, I was looking through all the magazines I have except summer issues. The main problem to solve was if the pattern had enough ease to have fluffy wrong side and if how well it would look on me. After selection full of doubts, chose #103 from Burda 8/2013, both of the modification were in use because the pockets were arranged on the fronts by the model #102. 

Очевидно з вищесказаного, думки про модель почалися з тканини, а не навпаки. Це не товста штучна замша з такою собі штучною овчиною на зворотній стороні. Більше нагадує плюшевого ведмедика :-) Тканина, насправді, це певний вид трикотажу. Поки шукала модель, передивилася всі свої журнали, крім літніх чисел. Головне питання було чи матиме модель достатньо свободи на пухнасту зворотню сторону і наскільки добре це буде на мені виглядати. Після декількох кіл відбору, зупинилася на моделі №103 з Burda 8/2013, обидві модифікації знадобилися, тому що кишені я розмітила у відповідності до моделі №102.

When the model was chosen, the pattern traced, the time of the cutting came: the direction of fibre on the suede had to be followed. Before starting the sewing I, of course, looked for advices in the Internet. There are plenty of them but none what I needed about this certain fabric (maybe I just decided not to waste time and looked for not thoroughly enough), mostly the things known for me as I had an experience of sewing both natural and faux fur. 

So after starting my sewing main things turned out to be true. I can use sewing machine, I can cut the fabric with usual scissors (the blade is not necessary) and, if to be quick, unpicking of the seams is possible without holes left (machine needle is thin for knits).

Як модель було обрано, викрійку переведено, настав час для крою. Тут треба було дотримуватися напрямку ворсу замші. Перед початком роботи, я, звісно, шукала поради в Інтернеті. ЇХ там дуже багато, але нічого з того, що мені було потрібно саме для роботи з цією тканиною (можливо, я просто вирішила не гаяти час і не так вже ретельно шукала), переважно поради відомі мені, тому що у мене був досвід роботи і з натуральним і з штучним хутром.

Після початку роботи виявилися такі головні факти. Строчити можна на машинці, можна кроїти тканину звичайними ножицями (тобто обійтися без леза) і, якщо швидко, можна розпускати шви і дірки не залишаються (голка для машинки тонка трикотажна).

The back yoke seam. At first I stitched it open from on the front side but it looked tough so I unpicked it.

Шов кокетки спинки. Спочатку  я його розстрочила з лицевої сторони, але виглядало грубо, тому розпустила.

Pockets. From this moment I used the same technique for all the edges to stitch.

The pocket size is 25 x 18 cm with the facing which is stitched to the right side and makes decor for the pocket. The pockets arranged quite low so they don't widen the hips despite the fabric and pockets type.

Кишені. З цього моменту всі краї я нашивала за однією технікою.

Розмір кишені 25 х 18 см з обшивкою, яка настрочена на лицевий бік кишені і прикрашає його. Кишені розташовані низько тому не повнять стегна незважаючи на тип тканини та кишень.

The front edge always needs to be reinforced because while wearing any kind of jacket or a coat, the front edge stretches to some degree not depending on the fabric, and the laps became open. Such kind of a coat has no facing so I stitched the firming stripe to the edge seam allowance along the front with much tension, you see slight gathering on the photo. It shortened the edge for about 1.5-2 cm but that's OK. Then bent the edge on the front for 1 cm and stitched. 

Передній край переду завжди має бути зміцненим незалежно від виду жакету чи пальта, бо має властивість розтягуватися в процесі носіння і тоді пілочки стають відкритими. Такий вид пальта не має підборту тому я настрочила на припуск зміцнювальну стрічку вздовж борту зі значним натягуванням, на фото видно невеличке призбирання. Це скоротило довжину краю на 1,5-2 см, але це добре. Потім зігнула край на 1 см і настрочила на лицеву сторону переду.

Shoulder seams. After the pockets were ready I liked the way the fur makes the frame around the detail so I decided to make the same on the shoulders.

Плечові шви. Як кишені були готові, мені сподобалося як хутро утворює таку собі рамку по контуру деталі, тож я вирішила те саме зробити на плечових швах.

On the sleeves, the elbow seam is usual, the front seam is on the pockets and shoulders.

На рукавах шов ліктя зроблений звичайно, передній шов як на кишенях та плечах.

Sew the cuffs.

Пришиваємо манжети.

The collar consists of two parts. Inside the collar it is better to put something like synthepon to add some volume to the collar. But I didn't do that. The inner part is stitched to the neck hole as usual with seam allowances inside. The outer part is layered on the right side of the coat and stitched by the fur.

Комір складається з двох частин. В середину коміра бажано прокласти щось на зразок синтепону для надання об'єму, але я цього не робила. Внутрішня частина коміра пришивається як зазвичай, з припусками на шви всередину. Зовнішня частина накладається на лицеву частину пальта і настрочується по хутру.

Обробка низу.

Buttonholes. Such kind of clothes require bound buttonholes but as my fabric is sewing machine friendly, I made combined buttonholes. At first stitched it with a thick firming thread and then overlocked the cut hole by hands.


Петлі. Такий вид одягу потребує петель в "рамку", але оскільки моя тканина добре шиється на машині, я зробила комбіновані петлі. Спочатку прострочила на машинці зі зміцнювальною товстою ниткою. Потім обмітала вручну.

ZoliDuo Earrings, or Nice Winter Morning

Yesterday I could spend some time for my beading and, at last, used these relatively new zoliduo beads which had been bought just for curiosity some time before. As I am not the one to experiment with all the diversity of new beads, that seem to be appear every day!, I mostly either wait or look for some appropriate tutorial I could follow with some modification if the piece needs any. I beaded the earrings yesterday and the night light made me doubt to some degree if I matched the colours of the materials properly. But when I took the photos today in the morning, the perception changed absolutely. The morning was the best possible in winter: sunny, frosty with fresh snow covering all around. And the earrings looked as if found among the sparkles of that snow :-)

Сережки з намистин золі дуо, або Гарний зимовий ранок

Вчора я змогла приділити трохи часу нанизуванню і, нарешті, використала ці відносно нові намистини золідуо, які купила декілька місяців тому лише з цікавості. Оскільки я не з тих, хто полюбляє експериментувати з усім розмаїттям нових намистин, які, здається, з'являються щодня!, то переважно чекаю або шукаю якійсь гожий майстер клас, яким можна скористатися зі змінами, якщо виріб цього потребує. Ці сережки я нанизала вчора і нічне світло спричинило у мене певні сумніви щодо правильного поєднання кольорів в матеріалах. Але сьогодні вранці, коли фотографувала, сприйняття зовсім змінилося. Ранок видався найкращим з тих, які може запропонувати зима: сонячний, морозний, зі снігом, який покрив усе навколо. І сережки виглядали наче знайдені серед іскорок того снігу :-)

The tutorial belongs to Marianna - M'A Handmade and can be found here. I changed the way the earring is connected to the hook, added extra arches of three 15.0 to decorate the middle superduos and added a dangle with a drop bead.

Poinsettia Scarf (Crochet)

The scarf is not new but, as it is as symbolic as any other Christmas feature for me, I decided to write a couple of words about it. The reason is simple. The last day of Christmas, which is on January 19 here, promised to be full of fun. I was invited to celebrate it with my friends who do bathe into the winter river on this day. It is a tradition connected with the Baptism of Jesus which is called here Vodokhreshche or Jordan (after the name of the River). Despite I am pretty old I have never taken part in that so would join the company with pleasure at least as a spectator:-) But I got a cold and had to stay at home so, to entertain myself, decided to devote a post to this Poinsettia scarf which I wear during all the festive month from December 19 to January 19. 

On the photo the scarf is paired with the green dress from the previous post.

Шарф "Пуансетія" (гачком)

Шарф не новий, але, оскільки для мене є такою самою ознакою Різдва як і будь який інший його символ, я вирішила написати про нього пару слів. Причина проста. Водохреще цього року обіцяло бути веселим. Перший раз мене запросили відсвяткувати його з друзями, які справді в цей день купаються у зимовій річці. Хоча мені і багато років, я таке бачила лише в телевізорі, тож із задоволенням приєдналася б до товариства хоча б у якості глядача:-) Але я дуже застудилася і мала залишитися вдома, тож, щоб розважити себе і вирішила присвятити допис цьому шарфові, з такою гарною назвою "Пуансетія", який я надягаю весь святковий місяць з 19 грудня до 19 січня. 

На фото шарф доповнює зелену сукню з попереднього допису.

The scarf was crocheted many years ago, to be exact seven... Oh!... I knew it because on the Ravelry all the projects are dated. Its age only says about its quality because the scarf still looks beautiful, attracts attention and makes the spirit bright:-) The pattern from Kim Guzman can be taken here now.

The scarf looks very festive and decorative indeed but it is not so warm as it wish to be. So to protect the neck from cold, it is desirable to wear some turtle neck sweater under the coat, then the scarf will be good to wear not only with a dress:-)

Шарф сплетений багато років тому... сім... Ого!... це точно... Я це знаю, тому що на Ravelry всі роботи датовані. Його вік промовляє на його користь та про його якість, тому що шарф все ще привертає увагу та підтримує святковий настрій:-) Зараз цю модель від Kim Guzman можна загрузити звідси. Шарф насправді виглядає дуже нарядно і святково, але він не такий теплий як хотілося б. Тому, щоб захистити шию від холоду, бажано вдягати светр з коміром гольф під пальто, тоді шарф можна надягати не лише із сукнею:-)

While crocheting I made some changes. Firstly, I remember that I was excited with the work that made 12 motifs so my scarf is longer than the sample pattern. Secondly, let me quote from my Ravelry profile, I added an extra row that "made the square look neater: sc in every stitch of the last row and 5 sc in every corner tr. Besides, I also crocheted the edging: began with 4ch in the corner dtr, 1dc in the first loop of the chain, skip two sc of the last row, repeat". And, thirdly, I had no idea about the beading in those times and it cohfused me so my scarf has no beads inside the centre of the flowers. 

Поки я його плела, трохи змін додалося. По-перше, мене це тоді так захопило, що я сплела 12 мотивів, тому мій шарф довший ніж у зразку. По-друге, процитую з мого допису на Ravelry, "я додала ряд, завдяки чому квадрат виглядає охайніше: сбн в кожний ст останнього ряду і 5 сбн в кожний куток з стз1н. Крім того, шарф я обв'язала по краю: почала з 4 петель ланцюжку в кутовий стз2н, 1 стз1н в першу петлю ланцюжка, пропустити 2 стбн останнього ряду, повторити". І, по-третє, в ті часи я нічого не знала про бісероплетіння, воно мене бентежило, тому мій шарф не має бісерин в середині квіток.

These were very nice holidays. I guess I am ready to start dreaming about the next :-)

Ці свята були справді гарними... Думаю, я вже готова мріяти про наступні :-)

Green V-neck Dress, or I and New Year's Tree :-)

Here, in Ukraine, we live using Gregorian calendar exactly like the rest of the world, but our religious holidays are celebrated by the old, Julian calendar. So our Christmas is on January 7. I  support  the idea to celebrate Christmas on December 25 and, since 2017, we have a day off on this date to respect those who keep to the new calendar all the year round because of their religious beliefs. But as for me personally, I started an own tradition for the day many years ago. I try to put the New Year Tree on December 25 or on the eve and hold a small party for the closest relatives who help either buy and bring the tree to my house or decorate it or just like to spend time together to feel the festive spirit and enjoy the first Christmas lights of the season :-)
This year my New Year Tree inspired me so much that I even dedicated it a dress. I've been wearing it during all the events of the holiday circle and, as we are still in the season up to January 19, hope to find the reason to wear it more :-)

Two sets of jewellery, Klimt's and Angel's, are matched to the dress.

Зелена сукня з вирізом мисом, або Я і Новорічна ялинка :-)

Я є великою прихильницею святкування Різдва з усім світом відповідно до Григоріанського календаря 25 грудня, тому була дуже рада, коли ми отримали вихідний день на цю дату. Але і без того я давно започаткувала традицію відзначати цей день. У нас дома це -  свято встановлення ялинки :-) Назва говорить сама за себе: або 25 грудня або в переддень я намагаюся поставити новорічну ялинку та влаштовую таку собі міні-вечірку для найближчих родичів, хто або допомагає ту ялинку чи то купити чи дотягти до мене додому, встановити та прикрасити, або просто полюбляє проводити час разом, щоб відчути святковий настрій та порадіти першим різдвяним вогникам цієї яскравої пори :-)

Моя цьогорічна ялинка настільки мене потішила, що я навіть присвятила їй сукню. Я вдягала її на всі події святкового кола і, оскільки ми все ще в ньому, сподіваюся на нагоду вбратися в неї знову:-)

Два набори прикрас, Клімта та Янгола, добре пасують до сукні.

I like a quick choice of the pattern and quick sewing, why it happens I have no idea but sometimes I as if "catch the tailor's wave" :-)

This time it was going on in this way. I bought Burda 1/2019 before me and my friend took a train to go on excursion to Kyiv. In the train I was looking through the magazine, saw the pattern #114 and in two days after coming back home the dress was ready.

Мені подобається швидкий вибір і швидке пошиття моделі, чому це трапляється не так часто, для мене справжня загадка, але іноді я наче ловлю "кравецьку хвилю" :-) Цього разу все відбувалося так: я купила Burda 1/2019 перед тим як ми з подругою сіли у потяг, щоб вирушити на екскурсію до Києва, у потязі я переглянула журнал, обрала модель 114 і за два дні після повернення сукня була готова.

The design of the dress is simple and is flattering for any size and type of figure. I simplified it even more. Firstly, because of my fabric which is quite thick and dense jersey so any extra thickness in the centre front wouldn't be good for the outfit, secondly, because I did need quick sewing and, thirdly, the mentioned above sets of jewellery were meant to match the dress (or, to be exact, to the outfit that had to be made of this fabric!) so any other decor was not necessary.

That's why I just stitched the centre front seam and processed the neckhole with the facings.

Крій сукні простий і прикрасить фігуру будь якого розміру та типу. Я спростила його ще більше. По-перше, через тканину, яка є товстим щільним трикотажем, тож зайва товщина по центру переду була б не доречна; по-друге, мені і справді потрібно було пошити її дуже швидко; і, по-третє, вище згадані прикраси були задумані і виготовлені саме для цієї сукні (тобто, до сукні, яка мала бути пошитою з цієї тканини!) і жодного іншого декору вже не потребувала.
Тому я просто застрочила центральний передній шов, а горловину обробила обшивками.

As for the elastic band, right because of the fabric's thickness, I decided to use the back seam as a pipe. In this way, it looks neater and it is possible to regulate the gathering of the back to the desirable width and the level of the fitting.

Щодо еластичної стрічки, то саме через товщину тканини я вирішила використати шов спинки як кулиску. Таким чином це виглядає охайніше, до того ж можна відрегулювати призбирання до потрібної ширини та прилягання до бажаного рівня. 

Klimt's Earrings

The best and correct name for these earrings would be "Me and Christmas" because they were beading between baking my traditional Christmas pie, cleaning the snow, cooking, the Holy night dinner and watching the set of favourite festive films. But I decided to save the name from the necklace as without it, hardly I would make the earrings and refresh my knowledge about the artist's life and work. And the latter provoked appearing the thoughts about seeing his pictures in Vienna's museums... It is never early to think over future travelling, isn't it?:-)

Сережки Клімта

Найкращою і правильною назвою для цих сережок була б "Я і Різдво", тому що їхнє плетіння відбувалося між випіканням мого традиційного різдвяного пирога, прибиранням снігу, приготуванням їжі, святковою вечерею у переддень Різдва та переглядом улюблених різдвяних фільмів. Але я все ж таки вирішила зберегти назву від намиста, оскільки без нього навряд чи сплела б ці сережки і освіжила свої знання про життя та творчість художника. А останнє, в свою чергу, спровокувало появу думок про бажання побачити його картини у Віденських музеях... Ніколи ж не рано замислитися про майбутні подорожі :-)

The idea of the earrings is simple. I took two elements of the necklace and joined them together. The pentagon bezels were made by the pattern but as for the baguette, it was not so easy. Instead of bezelling it in the setting, I embroidered it, in an ordinary way. For example, as I did it here.

Ідея сережок - проста. Я взяла два елементи намиста і з'єднала їх разом. П'ятикутні обплетення зроблені за зразком намиста, але з багетом все було не так просто. Замість обплітати його в оправі, я його вишила, в звичайній техніці. Як, наприклад, я це робила тут.

Klimt's Collar Necklace

I see the number of my posts is decreasing year after year... And how could it be in different way if to choose for beading such complex items like this new necklace that took me not less than a month and a half to make? And moreover, without this winter holidays break, I suspect,  I would bead it as long more or even longer :-) I cannot say exactly what attracted me in this necklace mostly either the name of Klimt or the original design of the piece but I had a firm intention to make this necklace from the fist sight. The work turned out to be unexpectedly troubling and now, when it's finished, I have a couple ideas about changing the way of beading of some details but I cannot but be happy with the outcome anyway!

Намисто "Комірець Клімта"

Бачу кількість моїх дописів зменшується рік за роком... А як ще може бути, якщо обирати для роботи такі складні речі як це нове намисто, на відтворення якого у мене пішло не менше як місяця півтора? І, більш того, маю підозри, що без цього зимового передиху на свята, я б його плела ще стільки ж або і довше:-) Не можу напевно сказати, що найбільше привабило мене у цьому намисті чи то прізвище художника в назві чи оригінальний дизайн, але з першого погляду у мене з'явилося непохитне бажання його зробити. Робота виявилася несподівано клопіткою і зараз, коли її вже закінчено, маю пару ідей, як можна було б змінити способи плетіння деяких деталей, але, як би там не було, результат не може мене не радувати!

So, the model Klimt's Collar by Jill Devon from Beadwork Feb/March 2012. It has many elements. While making the necklace, I followed the instruction but in my case it would be better to take rivoli 14 mm, the bezels are big enough, maybe because I used 11/0 Toho seed beads.

Отже модель Klimt's Collar від Jill Devon з Beadwork Feb/March 2012.  Вона має багато елементів. Поки плела, все робила за інструкцією, але, для мого випадку, можу сказати, ріволі можна було взяти 14 мм, обплетка достатньо велика, можливо тому що я використала 11/0 бісер Toho.

Making the centre ring made me a little upset at first. It ruffled as crazy up to the moment of joining the sides. Besides, last rows were so dense that I broke two needles while finishing the element.

Мене спочатку трохи засмутило виготовлення центрального кільця . Воно перекручувалося як скажене до останнього моменту з'єднання сторін. Крім того, останні ряди біли настільки щільними, що, поки закінчувала елемент, зламала дві голки.

Making the segments also had some specific moments. Right while making these details, the note about the importance of the tension became very actual. Because all first three beaded segments turned to be of different sizes... because of tension of the last four rows. Not to waste time for matching the tension, I remade the ready details, and, while finishing the segments to control the tension, just pinned them to the board.

Виготовлення сегментів теж мало свої специфічні моменти. Саме для виготовлення цих деталей зауваження щодо щільності плетіння стало дуже важливим. Тому що всі три перших сплетених сегменти виявилася різного розміру саме через щільність плетіння останніх чотирьох рядів. Щоб не марнувати час на добирання щільності, я переробила вже готові деталі і, в процесі закінчення плетіння, просто пришпилювала їх до дошки.

Bezelling the baguette differs pretty notably in my necklace. Firstly, mine is less in size so I started with 36 seed beads. And secondly, after making the peyote "belt", I sewed it to its setting and only then finished the bezelling. 

Обплетення ріволі в моєму намисті відрізняється доволі суттєво. По-перше, мій елемент менший і я почала з 36 бісерин. По-друге, після виготовлення "паску" пейотом, я його спочатку пришила до оправи і вже потім закінчувала обплетення. 

And the last step, sewing, took me several hours a day for few days. Probably because I used 11/0 seed beads of one kind, the segments were not curved enough to make a circle so, while sewing, I changed the spots of connection of the pentagon rings and, while sewing, pulled the last rows of the segments a little more to adjust the necklace's shape to wear it.

На останній крок, зшивання, у мене пішло по декілька годин на день протягом декількох днів. Можливо через те, що весь бісер 11/0 у мене однаковий, сегменти не мали достатньо вигнутої форми, щоб утворити коло. Тому довелося змінити місця з'єднання п'ятикутних кілець та, в процесі зшивання, стягнути останні ряди сегментів, щоб пристосувати форму намиста для носіння.
