About Me
- Oksana Starzhynska
- My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Fairisle Cowl, or Travelling Arrows I
The knitting started last Sunday. For the provisional cast-on, I used this method . But the stitches from the chain I cast off with a hook, too.
The pattern is for a scarf, but I decided to knit around as soon as I imagined how annoying it would be to see those strands of the treads when wearing the scarf, which, no doubt, won't fit around the neck as it looks on the photo.
The way to Baturyn fortress was very short, so the knitting was postponed till ... indefinite time:-)

Plain Top, or If You Have No Wish to Knit
After my experiments with peyote geometry were over and I got an unexpectedly nice the pendant and the earrings set, I was asked if I had any clothes to match the jewelry... Hmm... As a rule, such a question can take me unawares for no more than a couple of seconds:-) And in this particular case I had an immediate answer because on Saturday I sewed a plain top and, what luck!, had an old green skirt in a wardrobe (what a pleasure to be still able to put on the things I made several years ago:-)) and those items matched each other great.
I like knitting but, you know, to knit such a top would take me a few weeks and to sew it I only spend a few hours. So the process saved much time! By the way, it also saved enough money because the fabric had been bought on sale.
I've got a simple but very cosy "snuggling" top made from pleasant to touch, soft and well draping knits. So finally it is clear that all the mentioned stuff got along pretty well together:-)
The pattern is #106 from Burda 2/2011. As I had enough fabric, from the remnants I made a cowl to complete the outfit. I made the seam on the centre of the back and sewed a zipper in it.
From that issue of the magazine I also used to sew blouse 111 and skirt 103.
While sewing I reinforced the shoulder seams and the centre back seam for the length of the zipper. The arm holes require reinforcing too, not to be stretched. There's a special interfacing ribbon for that but if you have none, like me, the arm holes can be just stitched along the edge.
I also reinforced the sleeves hems otherwise the they would lose their shape very quickly because the knits is very soft and stretching indeed.
As it was mentioned above, I preferred to make a back centre seam to sew the zipper in it. And so the neck hole is processed with the facing. It is easy to cut using the drafts of the back and front. (I seemed to take the photo but don't have it) :-(
How to make a cowl I described in details here. So now just few pictures. This time the piece of fabric was about 184 cm x 29 cm.

Compromise with Romance Coat :-)
At this time of autumn, the feelings get more intense... especially when it goes about sentimentality, loneliness, the wish of snugness, and, as the final, the wish of romance... As for the latter, we are not great friends but instead, I'm an expert on finding the compromises between my imagination's activity and the reality of my life. So, I'd like to unite them again now and express all the above-said in one idea. Well, snugness - it is easy: on an overcast day let's wrap into a blanket ( a plaid sounds more romantic, of course :-)) and settle oneself on the sofa. It would be good to have some torchiere next to your cosy corner but if you have none (I don't either), any lamp will suit and then plunge into a romantic novel (I mean reading because in TV stories somebody already invented everything for us and matched all the men and female characters but we still want to dream about ourselves, don't we?...:-)) The classic of the genre is Jane Austen. Generally, any story without a romantic accent loses its charm otherwise what the life men have without women nearby? But Jane Austen's novels for me - are real dreams about the feelings that never happen and the places I'll never see... However, on the side of reality, there are real masters of compromises so let's leave the sofa and rush to the studio to create fairy-tales:-)
Coat #104 from Burda 4/2014 made from jeans with floral print corresponds to the idea pretty well. It has a nice fit, practical length and the absence of the collar gives a lot of variants to match accessories. The floral print lets you be as romantic as you want or are able. My only notion - the coat fits really well especially sleeves that are quite narrow so it is impossible to wear thick sweaters or jackets underneath.
And some more romance and warmth. The cowl crocheted by this pattern turns out to be a good accessory when wearing the coat in autumn...
The first sewing remark concerns reinforcing the front edges, i.e., the facing. When sewing jackets and especially! coats, it is always very good to iron the interfacing tape along the front edge; it is worth doing with a slight pulling of the tape to prevent the further opening of the coat's laps. In the picture, you can see the ready fronts are not parallel but while wearing the outfit they keep the shape and won't open, indeed.
The next notion concerns the cutting of the pockets from printed fabrics. I mean if your fabric has any print ( maybe excluding something like tiny polka dots), we must cut them according to the print pattern to match the details and the mark or the line of their sewing. As for this certain project, it will lead to the extra expense of the fabric. Here the example with a small top pocket but all four of them are cut in the same way.
Then process the pockets in the usual way.
And after sewing them to the fronts you hardly can find them and only top stitches unmask the details:-)
Sewing the lining. At first, sew the loop to hang the coat without a hanger.
Then sew a strip of sintepon to the sleeves' caps.
Now sew the lining to the facing, then to the sleeves. My idea for joining the lining is to sew it completely on the sewing machine, except the short parts to turn the coat out after the process is ready. For lining, I chose some kind of shirting because the main fabric, despite being named "jeans", has only the kind of weaving in common with it. So I decided the fabric with natural fiber for the lining will add some warmth to the coat and made it more universal.
Before sewing the lining to the hem it should be attached:
- to the back's facing;
- обшивки спинки;
- to the sleeves' hem;
- до підшивки рукавів;
- to the shoulders' seam allowance;
- до припусків по лінії плеча;
- armholes' seam allowance of the lining and the coat;
- шви пройм підкладки і пальта;
The last step - sew the lining to the hem. At first, from the facing to the slit.
It looks in this way after turning out.
Mark the lines of the cutting on the middle part of the back.
Cut extra fabric.
Turn the coat out to the wrong side and sew the lining to the long edges of the slit on the sewing machine.
Then sew it to the hem but leave the hole to turn the coat out.
Turn the coat out, sew the hole with a slip stitch.
And the last to sew the lining to the short edges of the slits. It's possible to do on the sewing machine as well but it will be much more troublesome than by hand :-)
My coat is light and it will be good as a raincoat for warm spring or autumn weather and maybe even as a duster for chilly summer. You don't see me often wearing black but here it looks well and I can even decorate it with this necklace.
Despite all my sewing experience, it is the first time I made such kinds of slits on the baсk of the coat... at least I couldn't remember any other case.
May 5, 2016 (updated)
The photo of me among the tulips was taken during my short trip to the beautiful arboretum in Kropyvnytsky (the link is to my album).
Now is the time of my active wearing the coat and I had to improve it a little. Actually, its necessity was clear from the very beginning of the sewing but then I thought I would avoid it in some way. I didn't :-)
So... the facing of the coat needs to be stitched to the front part for the width of the fastening in some way to keep the snaps on the spot otherwise, as they are under permanent tension, they can be torn off the facing and even harm the fabric.
It is not a problem to make while sewing the coat but it is also possible to correct when the coat is ready. Like in my case. There are a couple of variants to make it. I decided just to top-stitch the front edge as close to the snaps as possible. I used a different foot for that not to unpick them.

Make a Cowl, or Free Fantasy about Aurora Borealis:-)
This fabric was bought not because I liked it very much but just because on sale it was the cheapest satin suitable for my idea to make a cowl as its multicolour matches many items of clothes. Besides, the fabric's chaotic and bright pattern reminded me of the shining of Aurora Borealis, the wonder that makes anybody stunning and speechless being face to face with Nature. Even just looking through the pictures of the Nothern Lights none can stay indifferent to their beauty, splendor, and mightiness... nothing to say about a secret dream to see them one day with their own eyes...
I don't expect my cowl to impress anybody in the same way but at least it is an entirely available pleasure to make and wear it :-))
I'm a great fan of cowls, or snoods, or "tubes". It means I've collected probably hundreds of the patterns with bold intention to make them all... some day:-) But right now I only have two: one is crocheted and the other is yesterday-sewn. It is a simple and quick-made accessory so just look for a length of fabric, that you like but it is small enough to make whatever from it. It also can be a reused project: it often happens we can't say good-bye to some of our wardrobe's favs just because those cute flowers or polka-dots still inspire some sweet memories so let's enliven them a little!
How to Do
Generally, there are two variants, if you have a length of fabric 1.20 m x 140 cm. "Generally" means that you can sew it either along ( and then it will be short enough to twist it twice around the neck),...
(Аlong the selvages.)
...or across (then it will be long enough to twist it twice). But, of course, there could be different modifications: bias cut, making ruffles, adding laces, gathering, etc. - depending on your taste, wish, and skills.
(Аcross the selvages).
1. Fold the fabric with the right side inside. Be attentive! If at first, you fold sew it along the selvages, your cowl will be short. If you want it longer, at first, fold and sew the fabric across. Then sew along the edge with a seam allowance of 1.5 cm. Leave an unsewn part about 10 - 12 cm to turn the piece out.
2. Iron the seam.
3. Now we have a "tube". Now make the edges even and sew them together.
4. Iron this seam as well.
5. Turn your cowl out.
6. Sew the slit with a slip stitch.
Now you can style the cowl in your own way to wear... or can make a couple more:-)
In the photo, the cowl is paired with Theatre Dress.
