About Me
- Oksana Starzhynska
- My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Cotton Sateen Blouse-Style Jacket
I can't but confess that this absolutely awesome suit cotton made a lot of fun of me :-) At first, few years I couldn't choose the pattern to sew something of this fabric, and after the garment was ready, it was unexpectedly tricky to match accessories to complete the outfit. In the end, both of the tasks were done and I'm quite delighted with the outcome :-)
To make this jacket I chose pattern #105 from Burda 5/2020. It is a model of a nice blouse which is loose around shoulders and bust but at the same time is fitting around the waist. In my opinion, it is a perfect pattern for making a jacket to pair with a bias cut skirt. Thus both of these items put together an excellent suit dress. This latter term sounds a little old fashined and I don't know if it is still being in use in English speaking sewing community but I guess it describes well the ensemble consisting of a blouse and skirt made of the same light fabric.
The sewing is pretty quick, the fabric is not hard in work. The only process I canged is the sewing the sleeves. As the cup sleeve line is just a little curvy, I desided it would be simpler and faster at first to sew it to the armhole and then to join the sleeve and side seams as one single detail.
As it was mentioned above, it was confusing to match accessoried to the garment. None of my ideas work and the best choice turned to be Chrysanthemum Brooch and Simple Shapes necklace, I even didn't wear any earrings!

Bias Cut Cotton Sateen Skirt
The time of light coordinated two-piece outfits came and this year I met it almost ready :-) I mean I cut such kind of an ensemble, consisting of a skirt and jacket, but up to now I've got only skirt made. Fortunately, the skirt is absolutely fabulous. It is sewed of dense, and a bit rough cotton sateen, fits perfectly and, obviously, I am more than delighted with the outcome. I do hope together with the jacket which I am planning to finish as quick as possible, or at least earlier than winter will be here, they will look as stunning as it looks with this simple Broiderie Anglaise Black Blouse, my last Chrysanthemum Brooch and Goldish Powder jewellery set :-)
To sew the skirt I use pattern #114 from Burda 5/2020. The sewing is very quick. I even had nothing to photograph but a couple of ready parts. More than that, I made both the skirt and the blouse, the next post will be devoted to it, in a single day.

Yellow Cotton Jacket, or Cherkashchyna Sketches II
The morning of the first day in Cherkashchyna turned to be chilly and poetic. We were providential with the weather indeed. As a rule, in the end of July here in the South of Ukraine the best is to travel from shower to shower because of 40 degrees above zero heat but that day the absolutely comfortable temperature 25/28 degrees happened. So even having no other reasons to head to the region, I would leave my house for the sake of using the chance to enjoy the weather, nature and calmness as two days without air alarms mean a rest anyway. Romantic and lyrical mood of the morning was defined by the visiting Shuvalov`s Palace in Talne, an abandoned architectural sight in the process of renovation. The admiration and best impressions from the place wouldn`t be so bright without our guide, a young talented architect managing that hard and painstaking process. The most memorizing moment happened when one of our fellow travellers and the guide, who came to be a skillful musician as well, in turn played the piano put in one of the ball rooms right for such an occasion. That alive music was so well-timed and appropriate in those big high rooms as if fetching breathe in them and that unusual and unique moment was wanted to go on as long as possible.
I decided to make a suit at once as soon as saw both models in Burda 3/2023. First the trousers #125 were ready. For the jacket I chose pattern #104. I thought what to do if my 3 m wouldn't be enough for the suit. But finally, all the details were arranged and none of my plans B got in use.
The blouse is from the previous post.

Not sure if I say this in English correctly but the collar is really well-tailored here. I mean the patterns are given for the upper and beneath collars and that lets to achieve the proper fit of the detail. It seems I made this last time when sewing only one of my coats years ago.

During the trip the idea of seeing all regions of Ukraine one by one and not only well known featured sights often crossed my mind. It would be perfect.

Linen Jumpsuit
This year I suddenly wanted to make a jumpsuit. I have no idea why. Besides a slight chance I wore any of them in my childhood, my only experience of wearing this kind of garments dates back to my twenties when I was a little younger, a little bit more beautiful and surely much slimmer :-) I still can describe that chic and sassy model and the level of my confidence having it on but it is not actual and mentioned only to emphasize how far I was from this sewing idea last twenty years. None of the suggested in the magazines jumpsuits patterns during several years drew my attention. The spark for choosing an item to sew is as important as for human relationships because when wearing self-made clothes the intuitive idea of self-expression becomes particularly topical. At least I can tell it about myself. When the desire to add a jumpsuit to my wardrobe became quite definite, and I understood I wanted a simple laconic model, I started looking for materials. On one of the days after opening the stores after strict quarantine I saw the fabric I'd love to use. It was beige viscose filled with silhouettes of butterflies whose wings were partly painted in different colours. But at that moment I wasn't ready to buy it so came back to the store about a month later but the butterflies, as my friend said, "flew away". The fabric was sold out and from this moment the story of another apparel starts but I'll tell it some other time. 😉
I wasn't upset very much and changed the conception quickly. It occurred to me that sewing mono-coloured item would give much possibilities to wear plenty of accessories: my jewelry or different scarves or whatever. Thus I chose linen of wonderful coffee with milk colour.
The pattern is PDF Burda Style 6516A. As it happened before the pattern was bought because of models B and C but first I was inspired by A:-)
The sewing is quick: I am telling the story longer:-) It took 2.20 m x 140 cm of the fabric and I have no remnants in fact (what I love a lot!). I refused from the pockets: the trousers are wide enough and made one size bigger purposely to endure any heat outside. The front of the bodice is the single detail, I only imitated the front centre seam.
The shoulder seams have a little gathering so baste them on the back and stitch on the front to avoid tiny pleats in the seam.
The trousers back are being stretched along the inseam from the knee mark up to the crotch seam.
The processing of the armholes.
Before joining the bodice and the trousers, the trying on is obligatory to check the deepness/length of the crotch seam. The comfort of wearing depends on that.

The most interesting - matching the jewelry :-) From the beginning photo: 1. Colourful Memories necklace and earrings. 2. Peacock Feather Necklace and earrings. 3. Orange Mix Necklace and earrings. 4. Evening at the Seaside Necklace and earrings. 5. Sea Star Brooch. Something tells me I could match much more:-)

Fitted Stripy Blazer, or Never Say Never:-)
Generally I say this "never" often :-) But truly speaking, how many such popular phrases are in every day use? I don't mean the wide-spread manner to repeat different clever and not too much quotes of famous and unknown persons instead of reading books, observing life and making own conclusions... I mean their real understanding and acquiring of such sayings. When the words turn upside down our outlook, influence our lifestyle and change our way of thinking... In my life I came across just a few of them and here I'm not going to dive into the process of my personal growth :-) But when it goes about sewing from materials that require special attention and methods (and I mean the very troubles while working with them!) or about the processing certain details, I almost always say, "I'll never do it again". So such "never" is repeated quite regularly and there is just no sense to say it at all:-)
So... what I "never" do this time :-) Firstly, I'll never sew anything from stripy fabrics. It takes really much time to get symmetry of the stripes while cutting. Secondly, I'll never make welt pockets again.
If I didn't have 4 m fabric bought just because it was cheap, I hardly ever choose this #112B pattern from Burda 3/2015 for sewing purposely. It is just the very case to experiment because if my taste betrays and instead of a nice thing, I get some ugly monster, I won't regret about wasted money and time. I guess this time the taste didn't fail:-)
So cutting... brrr:-) Maybe somebody knows other ways to get symmentry but I always pin all the piece of the fabric along the stripes all around the details before using the scissors. You'll never believe how far from the symmetry the piece of stripy fabric can be. I mean I make the stripes on the both sides check with each other. As for the jackets, I usually leave the pins in the cloth until reinforcing the details and final cutting of the front details.
The item has the long dart on the back and as it was not symmetrical, I replaced it. It is easy to do. Mark the new centre line of the dart and then just put the paper pattern to the new spot.
The ready dart is mirroring:-)
After the final cutting of the front details, sew the darts, press them and sew the future pocket opening. The latter is being done with oblique stitches. In this way the firm joining is provided and it is much easily to process the pocket.
And only now we can cut the flaps because the lines of the flaps must check with the lines of the fronts. And I was very glad I had no fabric to match these details (I already planned the skirt from the rest of the piece) because I don't like such kind of pockets. And so my decision was to make double welt pockets.
By the way, the same rule concerns the cutting of the pocket bag from the main fabric. But this time I neglected it.
I must confess I simplify the way of making such pockets to some degree and this way is not exactly the same we were taught so nobody should follow it, however, I sew in this way.
I don't cut two welts, I cut the only one of double width with seam allowances. After stitching it to the front detail, I cut the welt without cutting the pocket opening. In this way you get two equal welts and the result is always good because it is much easier to make two parallel seams.
The next step is to cut the pockets' opening. The corners are supposed to be as neater as possible, probably it is the most troublesome moment.
After that press the seam allowances open, fold the welts around them and baste.
Baste the pocket opening again. And next time we'll remove the basting only after the work is finished.

Sew the lining pocket bag. Pay attention to the place of the stitching!
Now stitch the corners. Actually this step can be done together with sewing the pocket bags together. In this case you start the stitching from one corner, then sew the pocket bags (from the lining side) and then finish after stitching the second corner. But I do it separately. At first - corners.

Now stitch the second welt exactly in the sewing seam, then sew the pockets bags from the main fabric side. Iron!
After the jacket is ready the pockets look in this way.
Next headache of such a jacket is an English Collar ( I don't know how they call it in England indeed but here it is named in this way so I do it so).
A couple of tips. Baste the collar into the neckhole always from the collar side.
After stitching the collar, iron the seam allowances open.
You can join the upper and lower collars, facing and the lapels on the sewing machine, at least they say so, but I do it hand sewing with back stitch.
And to guarantee the nice corners don't forget to make an oblique stitch when sewing the upper and lower collars together.
It is almost ready. The way I sew the lining to the jacket is described in details here. In this jacket I made it in the same way including the slit.
The jacket is very fitting, I'd rather say tight, but this design lets it keep the silhouette and not slide from the shoulders because of lower fastening line. And thus the waist stays where it should be and not in the middle of the hips. It makes a nice suit with these trousers. I also found a restored blouse with rich ruffles sewed ages ago but I still like it a lot, pattern #116 from Burda 11/2000. These earrings added some playful note to the outfit.
So why I chose it then indeed... It probably sounds childish but it is absolutely sincere. I chose it because it buttons lower than the waist line is and was designed corresponding to that indeed. And it means it has deep and wide V-neck. And as I'm in making bijouterie now, it allows to wear ... the whole Christmas garland in that V-neck if I ever want :-) And it is a valuable feature for me:-)
