Safari Blouse, or Cherry Adventure

I have  a certain weakness to make sportive shirts from feminine fabrics. Probably because I like the idea of uniting gentleness and strictness in one piece. Such combination can produce splendid effect indeed and I mean not only clothes:-))

I can't say it happened often but not rarely as well. Since I started sharing my sewing experience in public, I've had two examples of what I mean. The first one is this safari blouse made from silky cambric and the second is a long-sleeved shirt made from thin cotton batiste as well but with floral print.

The blouse #111 from Burda 02/2011 is loose and comfy and has all the features of classic safari shirt but I don't think it is really good for that because hardly anybody is able to disguise oneself among nature's beauties having such a bright outfit on:-) Besides the chosen colour, the blouse catches the eye with its huge pockets so I guess one can use them as a rucksack in any journey.

So I used to name this project Cherry Adventure, in my opinion it corresponds the idea of uniting the contrasts pretty well.  And thanking to the surprising fact that the photos of my work on the blouse were saved I can post it here now, in three years after making.

Сорочка сафарі, або Вишнева пригода

У мене є певна слабкість до пошиття спортивних сорочок з жіночних тканин. Мабуть тому, що мене приваблює ідея поєднання ніжності і суворості в одному виробі. Таке сполучення може призвести до чудового ефекту і я маю на увазі не лише одяг:-))

Не можу сказати, що таке траплялося часто, але і не так вже і рідко. З того часу як почала виставляти мій кравецький досвід на люди, у мене з'явилося два приклади того, що я маю на увазі. Перший - ця сорочка сафарі пошита з шовковистого батисту, а другий - теж сорочка з батисту, але з довгим рукавом і пошита з тканини з квітчастим візерунком.

Блуза 111 з Burda 02/2011  вільного і зручного крою і має всі ознаки класичної сорочки сафарі, але не думаю, що вона для нього підходить тому що навряд чи комусь в такому яскравому вбранні вдасться злитися з красотами природи:-) Крім обраного кольору, блузка привертає увагу величезними кишенями, які, в разі необхідності, можуть замінити рюкзак.

Тож колись я її назвала "Вишнева пригода", думаю це якраз і відповідає ідеї поєднання протилежностей. А завдяки дивному фактові, що фото моєї роботи над сорочкою збереглися, можу розмістити її тут зараз через три роки після пошиття.

The mentioned above fabric is nice soft and pleasant to the body but it is also transparent. Nothing wrong with that because the front part is almost entirely doubled with the pockets. But it caused few changes in the cutting and sewing techniques. 

First, I made the single piece placket. I told about that already but here it was necessary indeed to avoid extra seams.

Then the pockets. It is better to sew them before joining the front and back parts. I also stitched the pockets along their inside folds to force them keep the shape and avoid the further bulging (the arrow on the upper photo).

Згадана тканина гарна, м'яка і приємна до тіла, але вона також і прозора. Нічого страшного в цьому немає адже передню частину блузи майже повністю продубльовано кишенями, але це спричинило декілька змін у крої та використанні технік пошиття.

По-перше, я зробила цільнокроєну планку. По це вже  розповідалося, але тут це було просто необхідно, щоб уникнути зайвих швів.

Потім - кишені. Краще їх пришити до того як зєднувати передню і задню частини. Крім того, я їх прострочила уздовж внутрішніх згинів складок, щоб змусити тримати форму і уникнути подальшого випинання (стрілка на верхньому фото).

Third, when making the flaps and the collar I had to cut three details of each to reinforce the upper parts with extra one. And that  made the interfacing not seen on the right side.

По-третє, для обробки клапану кишені та коміра, мусила викроїти по три деталі для кожного, щоб верхні деталі продублювати додатковою.  Таким чином прокладку цих деталей не видно в готовому виробі з лицевої сторони.

The collar is processed in this way. At first it to the wrong side of the blouse and then to the right side.

Готовий для подальшої обробки комір виглядає ось так.

Спочатку пришиваємо комір до виворітної сторони блузки, потім до лицевої.

And the last but very important - the processing of the sleeves' hems. I used to share the technique here. The idea is to hide the sleeves' seams if you going to wear the blouse with rolled up hems. As after trying the blouse on, I decided I would wear it only in this way a short tutorial was photographed.

So at first try the blouse on to mark the width of your further cuff. 

І останнє, але дуже важливе - обробка низу рукавів. Колись цю техніку я розмістила тут. Суть її в тому, щоб заховати шви рукавів, якщо збираєшсь носити її з підвернутими рукавами.  Після примірки, я вирішила, що носитиму її лише так, тому і було сфотографовано маленький майстер клас.

Спочатку приміряємо сорочку, щоб відмітити ширину майбутнього відвороту (манжета).

1-2. Then unpick the sleeves from the arm holes, lay them on the table and unpick the basting.
3-4. On the wrong side cut the seam allowance as close to the seam as possible right by your chalked line. Stitch the seam on the wrong side from the cap to that mark. Turn your sleeve out and stitch the rest of the seam on the right side.

1-2. Потім випоруємо рукава з пройм, кладемо на стіл і випоруємо зметувальний стібок.

3-4. З виворітної сторони по припуску на шов робимо надріз якнаайближче до лінії шва. Прострочуємо рукав від окатів до цієї мітки. Вивертаємо на лицеву сторону і прострочуємо решту рукава вже по лицевій стороні.

On the left top photo you see the wrong side of the blouse after hem is top stitched. On the bottom - the right side. And on the photo on the left - rolled up hem, no seam is seen.

На верхньому фото ліворуч - виворітна сторона сорочки, на нижньому - лицева. На більшому фото ліворуч - підвернутий рукав - жодних швів не видно.
