Spikes & Co Earrings

Spikes are quite popular and widely-spread motif. One or, maybe, even the most famous spikes are on the head of Statue of Liberty, the often used spikes are on the tops of fences, often-worn are as a part of some clothes' decor and probaly the most cute are Dragon's spikes (remember that pretty dragon from Shrek?).
I thought about none of the above when working on my new earrings (although subconsciously something could work in some way:-)) You know, the laws of attraction are not easy to explain. I just liked the beads a lot and wanted to do something nice with them. And made :-))

Сережки "Шипи & компанія"

Шипи доволі популярний і розповсюджений мотив. Одні з найвідоміших, або, можливо, і найвідоміші шипи можна побачити на голові статуї Свободи; найбільш розповсюджені - то шипи на огорожах; шипи як частина декору одягу певного стилю - теж нічого собі; дуже кумедні - шипи Дракона (пам'ятаєте милу дракониху зі "Шрека"?).
Але я не думала про жоден з цих шипів поки працювала над новими сережками (хоча, може десь в підсвідомості щось і спрацювало:-)). Ви ж знаєте, пояснити чому що приваблює неможливо. Мені просто сподобалися намистини і захотілося з них зробити щось гарне. От і зробила :-)

As spikes are Czech beads, the first, what I made, looked through Preciosa site's tutorials. And very quickly found this model, then gathered the materials and started the work. It was mostly experiment for me because the earrings are with soutache  and I'd never dealt with it (meaning the jewelry making). After few trying I yet finished the earrings but as for the soutache, I am surely only able to admire the others' works, the material left me indifferent... at least up for awhile.

Оскільки шипи - чеські намистини, то логічно було переглянути майстер класи на сайті Preciosa. Я швидко знайшла цю модель, зібрала матеріали і приступила до роботи. Це був майже цілковитий експеримент, тому що довелося працювати з сутажем, з яким я досі справи не мала (стосовно нанизування). Після декількох спроб сережки я все ж таки зробила, а що до сутажа, то я здатна лише захоплюватися роботами інших, мене цей матеріал залишив байдужою... принаймні поки що.

The difference between my earrings and the sample is not only in quality of the work. I used smaller spikes. My soutache is narrower and I didn't make twin decor. I also added groups of three seed beads between the spikes on the top of the inner side of the ring.


Різниця між моїми сережками і зразком не лише в якості роботи. Я використала менші за розміром намистини. Мій сутаж вужчий і я не робила оздоблення з твінів. Я також додала групи з трьох бісерин між шипами по верху внутрішньої сторони кільця.

I also decided to make cups from seed beads instead of buying them and used herringbone stitch . The technique is as the same as for these earrings but started with only four seed beads to get small pipe. Then I sewed the ready cup to the ends of the rings.


Також я вирішила сплести "шапочки" з бісеру, стібком "ндебеле" замість того, щоб їх купувати. Техніка така сама як для цих сережок, тільки починати треба лише з чотирьох бісерин, щоб отримати таку маленьку трубочку. Потім я пришила "шапочки" до кінців кілець.

And here is the end of my spikes adventure... actually it is just a start becaus I still like the beads:-))
P.S. By the way, when picturing the earrings, I thought it is a good idea to decorate Christmas tree with my jewelry next year, isn't it?



Ось так і добігла кінця моя "шипована" пригода... взагалі, це лише початок, бо мені все ще подобаються ці намистини:-))
P.S. До речі, поки фотографувала сережки, подумала, що це непогана ідея прикрасити новорічну ялинку наступного року моїми прикрасами, чи не так?
