Short Blue Belted Coat

First time I made a short coat, or as we say here a "half-coat", about 15 years ago and since then it is my third item of the kind. For me, it is a quite comfortable and much worn mid-season garment in our South Ukraine's climate. Besides, if to judge by how much I was wearing the previous half-coat, it is also indispensable piece of clothes for those who enjoy travel around the country in autumn or spring when it is about 5-10 Celsius degrees above zero. I also remember me in Kyiv having it on when it suddenly snowed and I wasn't cold. So, as my friend said, it is obvious why we haven't gone anywhere this autumn: it is because I only finished this new apparel a week or two ago and the pandemic is not the reason at all:-) 

Блакитне напівпальто з паском 

Вперше я пошила коротке пальто років 15 тому і з того часу це вже мій третій виріб такого типу. Для мене це доволі зручний вид одягу, який я часто одягаю в міжсезоння в нашому південноукраїнському кліматі. Крім того, якщо судити по тому скільки і як носила своє попереднє напівпальто, це незамінний предмет гардеробу для тих, хто любить подорожувати країною восени або навесні, коли надворі +5...+10 градусів. Також пригадую себе у Києві, одягнутою в подібне вбрання, коли раптом випав сніг і я теж не змерзла. Тож, як каже моя подруга, цілком очевидно, чому ми нікуди не поїхали цієї осені: саме тому, що я закінчила цей новий виріб лише тиждень-два тому, а пандемія тут геть ні до чого :-) 

The photos of the earlier coats were saved because in those times I knitted a lot and shared the sweater, scarf and the hat on Ravelry. 

Фото попередніх пальт збереглися, тому що тоді я багато плела і розмістила светр, шарф і шапку на Ravelry. 

This time for sewing a half-coat, I chose model #108 from Burda 10/2018, or Burda PDF #6290. I lengthened the jacket for 20 cm, it was easy to make correct lines because #107 is a coat made by the same pattern. I also changed the type of the pockets because my fabric is stiff and dense and I wanted to avoid the extra thickness of the few fabric layers at the waist.

Цього разу для пошиття напівпальта я обрала модель 108 з Burda 10/2018, або Burda PDF #6290. Я подовжила модель жакета на 20 см, правильні лінії було легко зробити оскільки модель 107 - це пальто за тією самою викрійкою. Також я змінила тип кишень, оскільки моя тканина жорстка і щільна, я хотіла уникнути додаткової товщини декількох шарів тканини біля талії. 

The sewing of any coat starts with the defining the direction of the fabric's pile.

To get new pockets I cut the paper pattern by the pocket's line. And thus got two parts of the centre front.

Пошиття будь якого пальта починається з визначення напрямку ворсу тканини. 

Щоб отримати нові кишені, я розрізала викрійку по лінії кишені і так отримала дві частини середини пілочки.

The front pocket pouch (cut from the lining fabric) also plays the role of the facing here.

The back pocket pouch plays the role of the back facing at the same time time. Before joining the pouch details, the triangles in the corners must be stitched.

Задня частина мішковини кишені водночас грає роль підзору. Перед зшиванням мішковини треба прострочити трикутнички у кутках.

The back must be reinforced along the neckhole, shoulders and armholes. It is very desirable to press all the bulging at once as in the ready coat, it would be more troubling to do. 

Спинку треба зміцнити уздовж горловини,  плечей та пройм. Всі здуття бажано зпрасувати одразу, тому що в готовому пальті це буде зробити важче. 

The front edges were slightly gathered and reinforced with the special stripe to avoid the opening their opening while further wearing of the coat. 

Краї борту було трохи призібрано і зміцнено спеціальною стрічкою, щоб уникнути відкривання пілочек підчас подальшого носіння пальта. 

To make the edges of the front thinner, before their stitching they were pressed open. 

Щоб краї борту були тонші, перед відстрочуванням їх варто розпрасувати. 

Before joining the lining, the collar's seam of the coat and the facing were sewed together.

До пришивання підкладки припуски на шви коміру жакета та обшивки були зшиті разом. 

After joining the lining along the inner edges of the facing and sleeves' hem, the details were  connected with bars. 

Після пришивання підкладки до внутрішніх зрізів підборту та низу рукавів, деталі були скріплені поперечними закріпками. 

The coat is fasten with plastic clasps. I also made a short belt with a covered fabric buckle. 

Пальто застібається на пластикові кнопки. Також я зробила короткий пасок з обтягнутою тканиною пряжкою. 

The leftovers of the fabric were used to make a matching beret.                                        З залишків тканини зробила берет.

Fabric Covered Belt Buckle (Blue Coat)

To cover a buckle with a fabric was my ancient intention postponed few times. But for this coat I couldn't refuse the idea to make it and looked through several YouTube's video in the search of a good tutorial. Some of them were absolutely helpful if to talk about the common basis of the process of wrapping. But there still was some space for the work's improvement.

Обтягнути пряжку тканиною було моїм стародавнім наміром, який відкладався вже декілька разів. Проте, для цього пальта я вже не змогла відмовитися від ідеї і переглянула декілька відео на YouTube у пошуках гарного майстер класу. Деякі з них і справді абсолютно корисні, якщо говорити про загальний принцип процесу обтягування. Але простір для вдосконалення залишався. 

I won't analyse the videos I have seen because learning is an individual process and the same methods work in different way for different people. I only must mention that there are two kinds of buckles to cover with fabric. The first are those buckles meant to be covered. It means they consist of two parts and the process of wrapping is quite quick and easy for a crafty person. The second type is a usual buckle which we have in stash or buy in the a hobby store and must invent how to make it look neat and stay functional at the same time. This latter is my case. My main recommendation is to use durable but thin fabric for underneath part. I reinforced a piece of synthetic lining fabric. Then it would be much easier to sew the coat fabric edges and the ready item will look more delicate. 

Не буду аналізувати відео, які я переглянула, тому що навчання процес індивідуальний і одні і ті самі методи працюють по-різному для різних людей. Повинна лише сказати, що є два типи пряжок для обтягування. Перший - той, який для цього призначений, пряжка складається з двох частин і її обтягування простий і швидкий процес для рукотворниці. Другий - звичайна пряжка, яка є в запасах або куплена в крамниці і треба ще поміркувати, як її примусити і виглядати охайно і залишатися функціональною. Це останнє - мій випадок. Моя головна рекомендація - використовувати для нижньої частини міцну, але тонку тканину. Я зміцнила клаптик синтетичної підкладки. Тоді зшивати краї пальтової тканини буде легше і готовий виріб виглядатиме делікатніше. 

The belt in the pattern is 5 cm but mine is 4.5 according to the width of the buckle. 

Пасок по моделі 5 см, але у мене 4.5 відповідно до ширини пряжки. 

I also had to install eyelets without any special instruments to fasten the belt. I learned how to make it from this video. 

Також треба було без жодних спеціальних інструментів встановити люверси, щоб застібати пасок. Цього я навчилася по цьому відео.

Cranberry with Sugar Necklace (Final)

The necklace is ready and the outcome can't but make me joyful :-) I am also glad that it does match my last festive gown as choosing the colourstyle of the necessary beads for this piece of jewellery, I had that outfit on my mind. One more reason to be in a good mood is that the necklace is ready earlier than New Year's countdown starts :-) 

Намисто "Журавлина з цукром" 

Намисто готове і не можу не потішитися результатом:-) Також приємно, що намисто добре пасує до мого останнього вечірнього вбрання, оскільки обираючи необхідні намистини для цієї прикраси, я уявляла саме цю сукню. Ще одна причина для гарного настрою: намисто готове раніше ніж годинник починає бити дванадцяту  Новорічної ночі:-) 

The process of sewing all the elements together took me the whole day yesterday and it only goes about the final part. The previous step, making a bail and joining the rivolis and cabochon, happened a couple weeks ago. This kind of bail was, in fact, the only element in this necklace which I had never done before. I had some prejudice as for it but, after all, the designer was right with this choice and it looks well here. 

На процес зшивання всіх елементів до купи пішла вся вчорашня неділя і йдеться лише про фінальну частину. Попередній етап - з'єднання ріволі і кабошона та плетіння бейлу - відбувся пару тижнів тому. Фактично, виготовлення такого бейлу - єдиний елемент в цьому намисті, якого я раніше не робила. У мене було певне упередження щодо нього, але, зрештою, це дизайнерське рішення виявилося вдалим і  тут виглядає доречно. 

Joining the pipe beads was really time consuming and made me a little upset as some pearls, despite they are of good quality, were harmed. It made me think over their change for gems as it is in the original necklace. At the end I refused the idea as I like what I have a lot and forgot about those pearls' scratches:-)

З'єднання намистин трубочок не лише забрало багато часу а і засмутило мене трохи, оскільки деякі перлини, хоча вони і гарної якості, були пошкоджені. Це мене змусило замислитися про їхню заміну на напівдорогоцінне каміння, як це і є в оригінальному проекті. Проте від ідеї я відмовилася, оскільки мені подобається що у мене вийшло, а про ті подряпини на перлах я і забула:-)

Blue Beret

Last weekend I finished a new coat but I want to start its work story with posts about sewing a beret and a belt to match the coat. Among the mentioned three items made of the same fabric, sewing the beret took me the shortest time and the post will do the same I guess :-) 

Блакитний берет 

Минулих вихідних я закінчила нове пальто, але розповідь про роботу над ним хочу розпочати з дописів про пошиття берету та паску, які ідуть до нього в комплекті. З вказаних трьох речей пошитих з однієї тканини, на виготовлення берету пішло найменше часу і, гадаю, так само буде і з дописом:-) 

The beret was made by the pattern #121 from our local Burda's Special edition Lyublyu Shyty, the collaboration with Burda Nordic, 4/2019. The upper part was cut of the coat fabric's remnants, and for the lining I used old woolen sweater which many years ago became probably 5 sizes smaller than I am now, but it was a pity to throw it away. Thus I got a quite warm hat for cold mid-seasons or for a warm winter as well if it happens suddenly. 

Берет було пошито за моделлю 121 видання "Люблю шити" 4/2019, співпраця нашої редакції Burda з Burda Nordic. Верхню частину покроїла з решток тканини пальта, а для підкладки використала старий вовняний светр, який вже багато років тому став, мабуть, на 5 розмірів менший за мене, але шкода його було викидати. Тож маю тепер доволі теплу шапку для холодного міжсезоння або і для теплої зими, якщо така раптом трапиться цього року.

Cranberry with Sugar Necklace III (Cabochon)

 

The third element of the Cranberry with Sugar Necklace is a beaded cabochon. It is not new work for me, too, as I have already made some my own models. I liked a quite reserved design of this sample. While bead-weaving, the instructions in the video tutorial were followed but I have a few remarks.

Намисто "Журавлина з цукром" ІІІ (Кабошон) 

Третій елемент намиста "Журавлина з цукром" - обплетений кабошон. Робота для мене теж не нова, я вже подібне виконувала і не раз, але власні моделі. Мені сподобався доволі стриманий дизайн цього зразка. Плела за інструкцією відео майстер класу, але маю декілька зауважень. 

Both notes concern the cabochon's decor. The author mentioned that to embroider the stone, the number of the seed beads must be even but to make the suggested decor in the last top row, there must be not just even number of the seed beads, it must be a multiply of four. To make the suggested decor in the last bottom row the number of the seed beads must be a multiply of three. Thus I made the corresponding decor only in the bottom row as it was easy to correct the number of the necessary seed beads. 

Обидва зауваження стосуються декору кабошону. Автор згадує, що для обшивання потрібна парна кількість бісерин, але для передбаченого декору останнього верхнього ряду, вона має бути не лише парна, а ще кратна чотирьом, а для передбаченого моделлю останнього нижнього ряду - кратна трьом. Тож я зробила відповідний декор лише для нижнього ряду, оскільки було легко змінити кількість бісерин.

Cranberry with Sugar Necklace II (Rivoli)

The second step of creating the necklace is bezelling rivoli. They are three here of different sizes. This work is not hard thing to do for me as I had beaded a lot of bezels before so the process took me a couple of evenings. It would have been even quicker if I hadn't had to change it a little.

Другий етап виготовлення намиста - обплетення ріволі. Тут їх три різного розміру. Така робота для мене не важка, безелів я плела багато, тож процес завершився за пару вечорів. Було б ще швидше якби не довелося його трохи змінювати. 

First, the peyote base stripe was too wide and the ready bezel covered the crystal too much so I decreased the number of rows. Then I didn't like the last row of the bezel, it turned to be a little ruffled I am well with ruffles but I got them uneven and it looked not neat. So after few attempts the final variant looks like on the ticked photo. I hope this change won't make some troubles when I compile all the elements together.

По-перше, стрічка мозаїчної основи виявилася заширока і в готовому вигляді кристал був занадто закритий, тож зменшила кількість рядів. Потім мені не сподобався останній ряд безелю, бо він виявився трохи хвилястим. Проти таких рюшів я нічого не маю, але вони вийшли нерівномірні і це мало неохайний вигляд. Тож після декількох спроб кінцевий варіант виглядає як на фото (під галочкою). Cподіваюся, така зміна не створить незручностей, коли з'єднуватиму всі елементи докупи. 

Cranberry with Sugar Necklace I (Pipe Beads)

 

It is the beginning of multi-series post about a time consuming necklace. The story of this item creating started two years ago when I bought three video tutorials from Natalya Kuzma as a Christmas present for myself. To gather all the necessary materials to make the first of the jewellery pieces by those videos, took me a little less than a year and, if to talk about bijouterie, cost almost a fortune :-) Miyuki Delica seed beads, Czech rivolis and pearls, and a rose quartz gemstone are among the materials I bought as claimed by the instruction. The work was started about in the middle of September and yesterday I finished the beading of the first elements of the necklace, pipe beaded beads. These elements are not new for me. I used to make alike beads for this Spring & Autumn Necklace but of Czech seed beads.

"Журавлина з цукром" І

 (Намистини-трубочки) 

Це початок багатосерійного допису про багато-часу-затратне намисто. Історія його почалася два роки тому, коли в якості різдвяного подарунку я купила собі три відео майстер класи від Наталі Кузьми. На збір матеріалів для виготовлення одного з виробів за тими відео пішло трохи менше року і, якщо казати про біжутерію, коштувало мені це майже статок :-) За інструкцією серед куплених матеріалів бісер Miyuki Delica, чеські ріволі та перли, та кабошон з рожевого кварцу. Роботу розпочато десь в середині вересня  і вчора я закінчила плести перший елемент намиста - намистини-трубочки. Ці елементи для мене не нові. Колись подібні я робила для намиста "Весна й Осінь" але з чеського бісеру.

Vintage Flared Dress

This is one of the dresses in the beginning of work on which, the question "why have I cut it?" always arises. It means the garment won't be made for two days. Those ones that I am able to make within the time, are not being sewed for two days as well but in the first case the term means not the duration of the work but the level of possible troubles that spin it out for sure. As my plan to make summer things in winter and winter things in summer is fulfilled only when it goes about sewing in a cold season the clothes cut and not finished in warm time because of a sudden start of school that is absolutely indifferent to my blogger's ambitions, this year I was very firm in the decision not to complete summer dresses in December. I hoped it would save my chance to sew even in busy school time and prevent my blog from regular hibernating  as the perspective to wear the season clothing as soon as it is ready is much more inspiring. But what can we plan in our life? Our mood only:-) Life is full of surprises and plans are ruined not only because of pleasant things, however, my blog is a positive area, so I won't delve into the nature of surprises here:-) Especially since my today's dress is so cheerful and brings only enjoyable emotions. And how else could it be if it goes about a yellow colour, the colour of the sun and life; and a fluffy skirt which as if invites to dance; and blue flowers in which the sea, the sky and hopes for only the best are. Tell me, how to avoid the planning for future now. :-)

Вінтажна сукня-кльош

Одна з суконь на початку роботи над якими, завжди з'являється питання "навіщо я це покроїла?". Це означає що за два дні таке вбрання я не пошию. Ті, про які я знаю, що можу пошити за такий час, теж шиються не два дні, але тут терміном визначається не тривалість роботи, а ступінь можливої мороки, і тому вже напевно затягується робота. Оскільки мій план шити взимку літні речі, а влітку зимові спрацьовує лише в частині дошивання в холодну пору те, що покроїла наприкінці літа і не встигла дошити, тому що несподівано почався навчальний рік, якому до моїх блогерських амбіцій абсолютно байдуже, цього року я майже твердо вирішила не дошивати літні сукні в грудні, щоб бажання шити не зникало навіть у гарячу шкільну пору і блог не впадав у регулярну зимову сплячку, та і пошиття нових нарядів без перспективи їх одразу одягнути не так вже і надихає. Проте, що в нашому житті визначають наміри? Лише настрій, адже життя, як відомо, сповнене сюрпризів, і не завжди плани руйнуються через щось приємне; а втім у мене позитивний блог, тому не буду занурюватися аж так глибоко у природу сюрпризів:-) Тим більше, що сукня у мене цього разу така життєрадісна, що не викликає жодних емоцій крім приємних. А як ще може бути, коли йдеться про жовтий колір, колір сонця та життя; та про пишну спідницю, яка наче запрошує до танцю; та про сині квіти, в яких і небо і море і сподівання на все гарне. І як тут, скажіть, не набудувати планів? :-)) 

The pattern #121 from Burda 2/2020 is really interesting and, after all, turned to be not complex to make. I decided to sew it at once but didn't want to use jacquard as I wanted my garment to be practical and wearable. I chose heavy fabric, looks like polyester staple which wrinkles as natural:-) The imperfection of the model is not enough noticeable difference in lengths of the front and back for such a wide skirt so the hem, at least in my fabric, looks as if cut wrong, maybe later I will even it in a usual way.

Модель 121 з Burda 2/2020 справді цікава і, зрештою, виявилася нескладною у виконанні. Я одразу вирішила її пошити, але не хотіла використовувати жакард, щоб сукня була практичною і носибельною. Для пошиття обрала важку тканину, схоже на поліестеровий штапель, який мнеться як натуральний:-) Недолік моделі - недостатньо помітна різниця в довжині передньої частини і спинки для такої широкої спідниці, через що низ спідниці виглядає наче неправильно відміряний, принаймні на моїй тканині, можливо згодом я його вирівняю в звичайний спосіб.

All the process was by the instruction. At first nothing special happens.

The most intricate part is preparation to the joining the bodice and the skirt, making the loops. 

Найбільш хитромудра частина - підготовка до з'єднання ліфу зі спідницею, утворення петель. 

Only after the draping and the loops are joined the bodice and skirt are joined as well. 

Лише після того, як петлі і драпірування з'єднані, ліф і спідниця з'єднуються також.

There is the embarrassing moment here I couldn't correct. The neck hole is too deep for me so I sewed together the draping details not only to make them keep their shape but also to disguise the deep cut. 

The epaulettes of the kind is an original detail I've never encountered before. 

Є тут один бентежний момент, який я не змогла виправити. Виріз горловини переду занадто глибокий тож я зшила драпіровані деталі не лише, щоб тримали форму, але також щоб замаскувати глибокий виріз.

Оригінальна деталь яку, ніколи раніше не зустрічала, погони такого типу. 

The dress is surely has charisma :-) It is impossible not to fall in dreams about warm days full of fun when wearing it. I guess the garment entirely corresponds my character. 

Сукня, без сумніву, має харизму:-) В ній не можливо не мріяти про теплі дні сповнені радістю. Думаю, вбрання цілком відповідає моєму характеру.

Close Fitting Jersey Dress, or Universal Summer Garment

The dresses promised to be suitable for any summer occasion are often come across in the sewing magazines. The description of such a model usually includes something like the following "in the morning you can wear this garment with flip flops to the beach, in the afternoon put on trainers to go shopping or sightseeing, and at night complete the outfit with high heels to go out", in this context "go out" probably meant to eat out or visit a kind of summer outdoors party or promenade along the sea or whatever else. I always thought how it could feel comfortable in such clothes if after the beach and, more than that, during and after a summer excursion in hot weather, I want nothing but take a shower and change a dress because of being sweaty. Besides, what is even more meaningful, I prefer to wear  clothes according to their functions, it means, I don't wear a tracksuit wherever but a sportsground (generally, I have no tracksuit at all  and it means I don't do sports :-)). That's why, when I leave for a rest, my suitcase usually has as many outfits as many days I am going to spend at the destination or separate clothes for a beach, for strolling around and I also, as a rule, pack a garment to go out but in a couple days it losses its freshness as well because in those resort places it is very very hot. But when I made this new dress, the idea about its possible universal using suddenly crossed my mind. I am sure it would be good for a beach, undoubtedly awesome for sightseeing and it is absolutely suitable to go out at night, for example, to see a play on a summer stage of our theatre :-)

Універсальне літнє вбрання 

В журналах для тих хто шиє часто можна наткнутися на сукні, про які кажуть що вони підходять на будь яку літню нагоду. В описі подібної моделі зазвичай читаємо, що вранці її можна з в'єтнамками одягнути на пляж, вдень з кросівками вирушити по крамницях або на огляд визначних пам'яток, а на вечір така сукня саме те, що треба, щоб вийти в люди, якщо тільки одягнути шпильки. Я завжди думаю, наскільки комфортно в такому одязі, якщо після пляжу та, більш того, після літньої екскурсії в спеку, єдине, чого прагнеш - прийняти душ та перевдягнутися через тотальне спітніння. Крім того, і це навіть більш значимий фактор, мені подобається носити одяг відповідно його призначенню, мається на увазі, що спортивний костюм я одягаю лише на спортивний майданчик (до речі, у мене такого костюму немає, і це означає, що спортом я не займаюся:-)) Ось чому, коли їду відпочивати, в моїй валізі, як правило, стільки змін одягу, скільки днів я збираюся провести на місці призначення, або окремий одяг  для пляжу, окремий для прогулянок і  також я кладу окреме вбрання для "вийти в люди", але  воно все одно втрачає свіжість за вечір-два, адже в тих курортних місцях завжди дуже спекотно. Але коли я пошила цю сукню, думка про її універсальність таки промайнула в моїй голові. Впевнена, що і для пляжу вона згодиться, і для денної прогулянки, без сумніву, буде зручна, та і ввечері не підведе, наприклад, коли поїдеш подивитися п'єсу на літньому майданчику нашого театру:-) 

Burda Dress #6531B is implied to be close fitting. Mine isn't, maybe because the knits I used is very thin and stretches very well. But it is not bad. Some loose around waist and flare silhouette around hips let forget about underskirt for more esthetic look. The same dress model #113 from Burda 6/2021 but it has no sleeves. I bought PDF pattern earlier than the magazine was published so used it. 

Сукня Burda 6531B має бути дуже прилягаючою, але моя - ні. Можливо тому, що трикотаж, з якого її пошито, дуже тонкий і добре тягнеться. Але це непогано. Певна свобода по талії та кльошний силует навколо стегон дозволяють забути про спідню спідницю для більш естетичного вигляду. Таку саму сукню можна пошити за викрійкою моделі 113 з Burda 6/2021, але без рукавів. Я купила викрійку PDF раніше ніж вийшов журнал, тож скористалася нею. 

The hardest part of the sewing is to have enough jersey for work:-) I was lucky :-)

The armholes, neckholes and shoulder edges were reinforced with stripes of the interfacing. I cut stripes and pulled them a little not to tear. 

Найскладніше в пошитті цієї сукні - мати достатньо багато трикотажу, щоб її пошити:-) Мені пощастило:-) Краї пройм, вирізу і плечові зрізи зміцнила прокладкою Вирізала смужки і трохи їх розтягнула, щоб не порвати. 

At first I stitched the centre front seam down from draping, then gathered it, then stitched gathered part. It seemed to be easier to keep the gathering properly in this way. 

To overlock the gathered edge I prefer to baste it at first. In this way I get it neat.

Спочатку середній шов переду вниз від драпірування зшила, потім призібрала, потім зшила призібрану частину. Здалося, так легше контролювати зборку. 

Щоб обмітати призібраний припуск, я спочатку його зметую, так виходить охайно.

The sewing is quick enough, the outcome is awesome:-) A few sets of jewellery matched the garment, that time I chose Fleur-de-lis.
