About Me

My photo
My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Seeming Simplicity Fitted Dress

When my mum saw me wearing this new outfit, her first words were, "So simple!" Simple, yes... while looking at the dress in the magazine I had the same impression but it lasted as long as I was going to trace the pattern. But all of us know that things are not always the same they seem to be at first sight and this model is a good sample of that. Right after finishing the tracing and cutting the details, it becomes clear that the dress's simplicity is feigned indeed. Its skirt consists of nine parts and the bodice - I don't know exactly how many details because every time when counting, I get a different number - but not less than fourteen and let's not forget about two-seamed sleeves!

The dress is worthy to make and has nice fitting and design but when it goes about a light dress and sewing in the middle of a hot summer, one mostly expects to make it as fast as possible. Occasionally I remembered that once upon a time I had a month of so active sewing that instead of washing the clothes I wore, I made a new item to change every other day... I was very young then and very stimulated to change outfits. Despite I am still young, nowadays my attitude to sewing differs and I see no need either in having so many dresses in my wardrobe (just because it has much less room than I wish it had:-)) or in making much sewing efforts in hot weather.

This model #112B from Burda 2/2016 really has many details but I liked it very much and at once. And all the above speeches happened only because I am late with the dress. I mean in my climate such a design is good for May or the beginning of June.

When making such multi-detailed things, I always try to sew as many separate sets of the details as possible at once. For example, this time my first step was: making a skirt, its ruffle, bodice, sleeves. Now all of them are ready to be overlocked and press. In this way, the process reminds the conveyor and the work goes faster.

To have better fitting of the two-seamed sleeve, it is worth sewing the front seam of the sleeve at first, iron it in the way you see on the picture, then sew the elbow seam.

Next step. To avoid the stretching of the neck hole, it is better to process it right after stitching the shoulder seams. It can stay unfinished until sewing the zipper. Then sew the band and then sew the ready sleeves to the bodice.

The detailed description of sewing the facing I've done here so now just a few pictures to refresh the process.

The most puzzling (if it's possible to say so) moment is sewing the inner band. As it is hot here, I had no wish to think over the way to simplify the processing so did it like they say in the magazine.
At first press the seam allowance around the band. If you are going to sew it with hands, then let them be 1.5 as in the outer band. I was going to stitch it with the machine so made the seam allowances along the band for two mm less than it was cut (in this way the detail of the inner band gets a little bigger than the outer) and along the zipper for 5 mm more.

And now sew the band. At first, I pinned it and then basted. It is not very comfortable to do because the dress is almost ready. And you should be attentive to avoid the overlapping either of outer or of inner band.

And I must confess I had the moment wish to omit this detail at all.

Then I top-stitched the band and then the neck hole.

And at last the hem. I lengthened the ruffle for three cm. The ruffle is, in fact, a "sun", or a circle form, and has both straight and biased parts so its width must be checked before the hemming. Instead of basting I just pressed the seam allowance and stitched them.

And now this simple dress is ready and the earrings, that were made specially to match it,  at last will enjoy the fresh air:-)
