About Me

My photo
My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Morocco's Night Dream Bracelet

This project is about my learning to bead a peyote stitch. When telling about the acquired experience there are two temptations and I should yield to the both I surely want to be honest but at the same time want to show a good result of my efforts. The first yielding can turn critical attitude to the work to self-destroying self-analysis, and another one - just will remind that nobody is perfect and it is worth accepting any of own experience as useful... I'm surely prone to the latter :-))

"The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it" O. Wilde.

When you are looking through the peyote projects and tutorials you can't help noticing that most of them ( or even all!) are made of cylindrical seed beads of a certain brand. I neglected this fact on clear reasons: such seed beads are more expensive and they are almost not available here so I used  #10 Czech seed beads that have the best choice of colours and more or less acceptable prices.
I chose Karshi pattern from +BeadAndButtonMag. To get it shorter I omitted a part of the pattern in the middle and stopped beading not finishing the second repeat. It didn't become a problem and, on the contrary, made up a new effect. The other days I was watching this tutorial and from about 33 min +Jill Wiseman is telling that to fasten the bracelet one can use snaps. It was exactly what I needed to solve the problem of its length.
On the picture it is also well-seen how the quality of my beading changed from the start to the end.

The bracelet is pretty wide so instead of thread I used fishing rope to bead because wanted the bracelet to keep the shape without folding. It turned out that the piece of beading started twisting at once so I followed the advice  to pull a piece of wire through the initial row of beading. I left that wire almost to the end of work.
One more simple but absolutely necessary advice. If the beading thread is stretching ( like mine) then before the work pull it until it stops stretching... have no idea why it didn't occur to me indeed :-)

So, if not to mention the number of months passed between the start and the finish of this work, the result is not so bad. And when the dress, for what the bracelet is meant to be, is ready, this piece of my beading will probably seem to be the best :-))

Rushed Shirt, or Heat Is not for Snowflakes :-)

I only say that because while I was making my blouse-shirt from that mysterious fabric, its pattern started reminding a nice flower Columbine that bloomed this week. Besides, it was 31C degrees  above zero today here so the thoughts about snowflakes could be pretty pleasant (especially if somebody treated to an ice-cream:-)) but the associations do not occur. :-)

The motifs of the print are pretty big so the blouse had to be pretty simple and without extra constructive lines: they wouldn't be seen anyway but their making would distress any sewer because, besides having its pattern's defect, the fabric turned out to be so dense that while basting the details I sometimes used the pliers to pull the needle through the fabric layers!

Thus  I chose pattern #7 from Diana MODEN 12/2013 ( Ukrainian edition ).

Let's start with cutting. Firstly, you have to exclude the defect part of the fabric so fold it not including the border. It will mean your fabric becomes narrower. Then, of course, the symmetry of the motifs must be preserved.

And some words about plackets. Whatever the design of the model is I never stiffen the placket with interfacing. Depending on the design of the garment I cut either one-single piece placket of three layers of fabric or (like in this my blouse) if it is impossible, cut it separately but from three layers of fabric as well. One of these layers serves as interfacing.
So draft three widths of the placket with seam allowance, cut it a little longer, then you will trim it easily after sewing to the front. Then the seam allowance of the inside part of the placket must be cut off. Fold twice, press well. Check the symmetry again.

Unfold the placket and sew to the front parts, press well, fold again, baste, sew the top part of the placket to the front with top stitches. Then trim the neck hole line by the paper pattern and trim the bottom of the detail. That's all.

In this way you can sew any separately cut placket and even cuffs.
Have a nice rest, everybody!

Inspiration in Reverse Earrings

Despite I'm just an apprentice and pretty far from the level of a magician in the beading, I'm not the one who would make tons of samples to put them in the  casket and then  time after time would look at them to admire with own patience and industry... It is the very circumstances to mention "not my cup of tea"... and it never was, by the way. Whatever I learn to do now, I'm eager to use it for practical purpose. And it is exactly the case when the skills have only practical meaning... But another case is to change the idea of the using :-) I'm not a master in it at all and only let the things go in their natural way. Why to be violent with  fantasy... I do nothing harmful so nothing bad can be made :-)
All this short speech is devoted to my today's earrings. A couple of days ago I made a pendant and was going to complete it with a couple of earrings to get a set. But after finding few ideas for beaded beads I made them so different in style with my Daisy that they obviously reminded me Turkish lamps which I saw in a souvenir store in Rethymnon two years ago. And I wanted such a lamp at that time indeed... So  now I have no lamp ( have no idea where I would ever hang it) but in return I possess a couple of earrings from Roxelana's  stock :-
)

Це якраз той випадок, коли наші англомовні співземляни кажуть " it is not my cup of tea".

The process of making.
1. Big beaded beads were made by this tutorial (in Russian but photogrаphed completely). The ready image of the bead depends only on the used materials. My bead has a different form because instead of round beads I used big seed beads.

2. The beaded pearl made by this tutorial.

3. Beaded earring post by this tutorial.

Thus, all the elements are ready to join.

4. The way of joining can be different, you can just make loops of seed beads and connect the elements with jump rings, or bead them together like I did. I'm sure there are more variants.

And here they are: light and merry :-)

Snowflake Named Daisy Pendant:-)

The other days I cut a blouse-shirt. From nice fabric with border print... The border looks pretty strange: with the effect of some washing with bleach... But I forgave the producers this defect and resigned that effect. Because I liked the rows of big snowflakes that made me think about kaleidoscope's patterns designed of the pieces of glass of the only colour.
However, this post is not about the blouse:-)) The shirt's neckline is created right to wear a pendant in it. And I wanted to make some simple jewelry reminding the motif of the fabric pattern. As it is not a snowflake season indeed, so to make the pendant I chose the pattern of the flower that can be used either like a snowflake, or a camomile, or edelweiss (which I've never seen), or a dahlia, or, even a chrysanthemum. The variant depends just on the need and materials. And I've got... a daisy ( at least I like to think so :-))

First what I did - chose the colour style for my pendant. There were two variants either to make it in the hues of the fabric or contrast. To avoid the agonising process of choice which I dislike, I just put the bags with beads on the fabric and wait for the "click". That's all :-))

So let's start with beading a pearl. It was my first experience and I had to learn how to make it. So just followed this tutorial. It is in Russian but photographed completely. Besides, the technique is not a top secret so you can find it in any language as well.
After finishing this step I chose the flower I wanted and decided not to make it separately but join the initial seed beads to the beaded pearl at once.

As I've already mentioned, the flower supposed to be simple. I liked this one and  made mine of two parts, too: first flower was beaded from the pearl and the second flower was beaded separately. Then I just sewed them together.
It is clear from the photo how I modified the flower. So you can decrease or increase the number of the petals, make them shorter or longer. The pattern is easily to adjust to any need. Simple but effective:-)

Generallу, that's all! To finish the work I used the ready rope for the necklace and one jump ring to hang the pendant.
So have a nice Daisy day :-)

Thrifty Glamour Bag:-)

To have any skills in any needlework is not only interesting but very useful as well. To the interest I would refer a wish to learn and make  something new, different challenges and  curiosity. And as for the useful side, the opportunity to save while making pretty and exclusive things is, probably, the most important. So today's post is devoted to this idea - to spend less to impress a lot :-) At least I'm quite impressed with this my clutch. Generally, I'm very sceptical about self-made bags... no... not because I am a snob of a certain kind... I like the bags made by my Burdastyle friends and some of the samples I came across the Internet. I've just never noticed in myself the wish to make the bag so neatly and thoroughly to get a worthy one. The maximum effort I've ever done about this was crocheting a market Tote bag and a Red Redicule, which I walked no times! But.. everything happens :-) So the clutch, I finished last night, is the result of a pure experiment to make  something shining and glamouring without spending any extra penny:-)

To make the bag by this  Amy Butler's free pattern only leftover materials were used. I just followed the instructions. My only modifications are:
1. I reinforced twice the material I used as "canvas" in the project because it was not dense enough for the bag.

2. The tab turned out to be longer than it was needed so I had to shorten it after it was ready. But that is not a trouble at all.

 3. I also added the inside pocket. The size and the position depends on the taste.

Some piece of advice. On the photo you can see how to iron the joining seam open when assembling the clutch, (Step 4, Diagram 9). By the way, the same method is used when processing the front edges of coats and jackets with a facing to make them thinner and neater!

After finishing the purse looked in this way. Pretty nice already.

As I had no vintage pin but wanted to give the purse some smart look, I made a brooch.
I draw the oval as a pattern and cut thе following details by it.
One detail of the brocade patch from my mum's dress (I guess she wore it before my birth so we won't count how old it is:-)), three details of synthepon (every is less than the other), and one of not very thick cardboard ( this one should be 1 cm less than the brocade oval). Then trim the biggest synthepon detail by the size of the cardboard.

Make the baste seam along the brocade detail for about 0.7 cm from the edge, pull the basting thread, put synthepon and cardboard details inside the brocade one. Pull the tread to maximum, then sew the seam allowances with zigzag stitch.

Now let's make а ruffle. It should be double and narrow, mine is 1 cm. Cut a stripe on the bias  from the clutch fabric, seam the short edges, fold along and make stitches for further gathering either by sewing machine or hands. Then pull the thread and sew the ruffle to the brocade body.

The last step is to sew the bottom detail to the brooch. Cut an oval form the clutch fabric, fold the edges inside and sew to the brooch  with slip stitch. You can either glue the brooch to the brooch base or add a pin. But as I'm not going to wear it separately, I just sewed it to the clutch's tab forever:-)

If to judge by the look, the clutch is pretty miniature but it has enough room for my usual theatrical set of things ( glasses, telephone and lipstick case :-))

I guess the experiment is very successful so if you want to emphasise your individuality but can rely only on yourself, join the company of this clutch's fans:-))

16 April 2015

Join the Blossoming Time Top:-)

April in Ukrainian is "Kviten", it means something about "the time of blooming". Such a great source of inspiration as blossoming can be ignored in no way! So several hours at the sewing machine resulted in such a thematic item like this either blouse, or tunic, or top, or pullover: you can call it in any way. The fabric was bought purposely for this project just because I like borders and because its colour style makes it a good partner for few items in my wardrobe. And this latter reason often becomes decisive in my choices. I like to combine things I've already got with new ones. It reminds me the times when I drew and played with paper dolls, who had so much clothing that any celebrity could only grind her teeth because of envy:-) Besides, it surely helps express your mood and with minimum means create maximum effect:-)

On the photo below it is in a pair with white trousers so now I only can say Happy blossoming this April, dear ladies:-)

( How to make the jewellry is  here)

The top is a quick and simple project from Burda 3/2015, pattern #107. The issue has the tutorial so to sew the top (or blouse) is easy for anybody with any sewing skills. However, I would make a couple modification. One of which I yet made and another - I didn't but had to:-(

1. I would recommend to omit the gathering on the back. Anyway, but especially if you have even a slightest stoop. The ready blouse is pretty loose and, as it has a single-piece sleeve, moves back and forth on the shoulders and in this way you get bulging on your back. To change the paper pattern is very easy. Put detail #3 to detail #6 and mark the point of the relief seam on  detail #3. It is about 11 cm. Then put the edge of detail #4 to this new mark and draw new relief line on detail #3.

Now just glue the both parts along the new relief line and then even the bottom edge.

2. Putting on the ready blouse I felt not comfortable because don't like such loose and "agile" things out of my control, although there is a big plus in it - I didn't have to sew а zipper:-) So I made waist darts to add some fitting.

Easter Tree:-)

There are a lot of little pleasant things to make to decorate the home for any holiday. But as a rule, I'm sure they are pretty quick to do and I have a plenty of time far ahead the holiday to be engaged with their making so postpone the process to the last minute. And, as a rule, when this last minute comes I'm tired enough with the main preparations so mostly persuade myself very quickly that it is possible to live without these pleasant trifles one more year and that next year I'll find the time for making them... and so the procedure repeates again and again... Hope I'm not the only one who gets in this holiday trap year after year.. So this time I decided firmly yet pamper my house with one of these " little pleasant things" and am glad I was strong enough for that :-))

This is really a very simple quick and easy project. To crochet such Easter eggs takеs not much time but the decor rejoices the eye and adds some festive accent to the house.

I invented almost nothing, just used this pattern from Drops. It is very versatile and requires minimum crochet skills. Besides, everybody can try to modify the pattern on its own depending on the yarn, colours and taste.
So after looking through the yarn leftovers I have, I chose yellow and blue cotton. At first, I made five eggs of single colour and then crocheted few more stripy ones.
And probably the only piece of advісe I can give is when filling the eggs, cut the wadding to get the even look of the eggs.

 And Happy Easter to everybody!
